Eli Peteuil starts on newspaper staff

Brooke Everhart, Guest Writer

Junior Eli Peteuil is in his first year of news writing. Peteuil is driven by the feeling of accomplishment when publishing his stories.

Peteuil faces anxiety while interviewing.

”The biggest challenge I would say is sometimes motivation and just ideas for the things like how are you going to transition this quote and transition this quote sometimes the hardest part is finding the transition and not sounding repetitive,” Peteuil said.

When Peteuil starts writing his story, he deals with nervousness.

“It’s kind of nerve racking whenever you’re giving it to an editor because it’s like what if it’s complete crap, and they’re like I hate the story,” Peteuil said.

During Peteuil’s time on the intro to pub staff, he had great experiences but has to take more responsibility for the actual staff.

“It felt really cool to be actually doing something that any student at the school could see. It just felt cool that anything I wrote would actually go on the site, back then it felt cool. Now I think it’s more nerve racking because that stories out there; everyone sees your name. They can leave a comment on it, so now it’s like oh boy,” Peteuil said.

Petueli talks about his time on the pub staff.

“The actual staff you have a lot more freedom, and you’re trusted with a lot more things. Being on the actual staff comes with a lot more responsibilities, and no ones really holding your hand anymore; you kind of pick your story. You just have to go do it, and you have a job and you go do it. Being on the intro to pub staff Mrs. Vanish kind of guides you with everything, and you know there are people you can ask,” Peteuil said. “It was nice having Mrs. Vanish tell you what to do because that way you knew you wouldn’t really mess up because again that’s another thing it’s scary sometimes; you’re like ‘oh did I do this right? Is this how you’re supposed to do it.”

Peteuil shared some advice for any newcomers on the staff.

“I would just say definitely keep a hold of your deadlines like knowing when things are due and trying to have them done before because deadlines are something that I’m not the best with. I’m ahead of all mine now, but if you let one thing pile up then everything else will keep going, and it will be so hard to get anything done,” Peteuil said. “News writing I would say is one of the most demanding classes in doing things, that and yearbook is even more demanding but news writing is like there’s a lot to do for it and a lot that you just need to keep track of.”

Peteuil shows a lot of passion for news writing and is overcoming his nervousness. He has learned how to take responsibility and how to get all his work done while still having fun.
