I have many obsessions: sweet tea, books, “Dance Moms” and most importantly: the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As of now, there are 27 movies and six Disney+ series. Not all of the movies were released in the timeline order, so Disney+ has a feature where fans can watch the movies in the specific order. The 15th movie in the timeline order: “Black Widow,” was released on July 9, 2021. Spoiler alerts ahead:
The movie starts in the past, 1995 to be exact, where a young Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) and her sister, Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) are taken away from their “parents”: Alexei Shostakov, Russia’s Captain America known as the Red Guardian, and former Black Widow Melina Vostokoff. They were apparently on a “mission” and since that one was finished, they were put in the Red Room for more training.
Then in 2016, after the airport battle, Nat is a fugitive because she violated the Sokovia Accords by letting Steve and Bucky flee. She escapes from Secretary Ross and goes to Norway where she reunites with Rick Mason, a guy that has been helping her. Yelena still works for the Red Room; however, after she kills a former Black Widow, she comes in contact with a red dust which removes the control over her. She then sends it to Nat’s safehouse.
Nat unknowingly has it, and is attacked by a person called the Taskmaster who wants the antidote. This is when she finds out that Yelena sent it to her. They end up reuniting in Budapest, but are attacked by Black Widows. Nat then finds out that the Red Room is still active and its leader Dreykov is still alive, somehow. The way that Nat was able to join SHIELD was by killing Dreykov by setting off a bomb in the building where him and his daughter, Antonia were in. Both were presumed dead. The fact that his daughter was there still haunted Nat to that day. Her and Yelena meet up with Rick who gives them a plane.
They then realize that they need Alexei’s help, so they break him out of prison. He tells them that Melina knows about Dreykov, and has been staying on a farm using mind control on pigs. They all start bickering about being a family once they unite, but Melina tells Dreykov their location, causing them to get captured.
Once they get to the building where they are being held, Dreykov congratulates Melina for finding them; however, it is revealed that Melina and Nat used the same mask technology that she used in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” to switch places, planning their own capture. Nat then finds out that the Taskmaster is Antonia. Her injuries from the explosions were so bad that Dreykov had to put a chip in her, making her a soldier. She also finds out that she can’t hurt him due to a “lock” he has in every Black Widow and that he has been controlling all of them from his control desk. She almost convinces him to punch her in the faces and purposefully severs a nerve in her nose to negate the lock and attack Dreykov.
While Alexei fights Antonia, Yelena tries to find the other Black Widows. Dreykov escapes as the Widows are ganging up on Nat, but Yelena creates an explosion of red dust and releases them from control. Nat gets to the desk and releases the other Widows worldwide. Once the ship they are on explodes, the others escape while Yelena takes out Dreykov’s escape ship which kills him.
Nat then frees Antonia from control after using the last amount of red dust. They all say bye to Nat, since she has other things to take care of with the Avengers. Yelena gives her vest to remember her (which she wears in “Infinity War”).
The post credit scene shows Yelena meeting up with Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, her new employer, at Nat’s grave and learns that her next mission is to kill the man responsible for her death: Clint Barton. (Find out more in “Avengers: Endgame”).
