What worries the world

Where does it all go downhill?

November 7, 2022

The world isn’t perfect, and everyone knows that. In fiction books, maybe it’s perfect, but definitely not in the real world. As much as humans try to make it perfect, it’s not, and it hasn’t been for a while. Sure, we could discuss the idea of climate change and global warming, but to what avail?

Continuing with climate change, people have been speaking out about it for so long without much help coming from it. I remember there was a cancellation of oil drilling in Alaska, mainly for the concern of wildlife and the glaciers. I know for a fact, at first, I did not care about the glaciers, and I felt sympathy for these animals that had the potential of not surviving. But everything in those areas, and even around the world, is critical for the planet staying healthy. Without cancelling the drilling, whales, polar bears, seabirds, walruses and so many more animals would have been at risk for dying or even nearing extinction. Oil and water don’t mix, that’s basic science, so the potential spillage that could’ve come from that would’ve been tremendously hard to clean. The situation doesn’t only affect animals, it hurts humans too. Indigenous people still thrive in Alaska and their ways of obtaining food and just living could’ve been jeopardized.

Again, that’s just one issue that happened. Now, there’s even more going on worldwide.

Going back for a second to when I said about the cancellation of oil drilling in Alaska, it was initially planned by President Donald Trump, but was cancelled by President Joe Biden.

That’s what’s leading me into this issue: politics.

I despise politics. Plain and simple, I hate them. It is of course necessary, without it there would be no organization, laws etc. It’s just the way that politics run in my opinion. Right now, especially with elections coming up for Pennsylvania, politics are coming back and being discussed more. On the negative side of politics, they are focused on more than critical issues. Sure, who someone is voting for is a good discussion, but what about a discussion about Hurricane Ian, or what’s happening in Iran? There should be a fine line drawn where politics is less important than some topics, but people are seeming to forget this border. There’s also the fact that people will judge others purely based on their political views. If the whole idea of politics is to bring people together, why are people forcing themselves away from each other?

It’s sad to watch people judge others based on their views. I believe that everyone’s views are valid, unless it involves ideas/issues that are morally wrong. I draw a line that politics does not top world issues.

Instead of bringing people together, politics is driving a wedge between the separate parties and voters. According to Harvard Business Review, these politics could be a big threat to the US.

Aside from politics, sexism is on the rise again. But, has it ever really gone away? In my opinion, no, it has lessened a bit for both parties, but it is still extremely evident in society today. I can scroll through social media for a short while before I find some form of sexist post. It’s honestly repulsive to see either side constantly berating the other. Especially because there’s been so much argument over equality and the struggle for both to be equal when, in reality, it’s not equal, and I don’t think it will be for a while. Instead of arguing with the opposite side, why can’t we work together? Maybe, just maybe, that would fix the whole issue, but that’s just a thought. That also brings up the argument that women’s mental health is taken more seriously compared to men’s. I can completely understand how that’s happening. In a way I agree, women are huge advocates for mental health awareness, and I don’t see very many men talking about it, but don’t also defend men. If we’re searching for equality, it must be equal in every sense. We cannot leave one topic out of question because of broken standards from so very long ago. Men and women both have feelings, so we need to acknowledge them equally.

That leads me into mental health. This might bore someone with the ‘same old mental health talk, blah blah blah’ mentality. I disagree. Mental health can never be talked about enough or too much, not until people recognize it and accept it as a part of some people’s lives. An issue I see with mental illness now is people romanticizing it. I cannot stress it enough that having anxiety, depression, borderline personality disorder etc., is not fun. Some people will sit and post something on social media romanticizing a genuine illness and think it’s okay. I don’t think it’s funny to say someone has something they don’t and make it a joke because people genuinely struggle with mental illness. As well as romanticizing it, I want to discuss mockery or flat out avoiding it. It is so unbelievably cruel to mock someone who has a mental illness or if someone has it and it is evident, their caretakers and friends ignore it and don’t offer help. Instead of helping someone by offering help, people choose to let it slide, and it’s far more dangerous to let someone slip into mental illness too far. Going back to mocking, simply don’t do it. It’s rude and dehumanizing. If someone wouldn’t want it done to their mother or brother, don’t do it to another human being. Mental illness does not make someone lesser than a neuro-typical person.

Another extremely important topic is racism. A lot of people talk about it, but I don’t see a lot being done about racism. I personally cannot speak for anyone, but I can say that racism is still an issue in society. One thing I see a lot is people defending it from older people. Times have changed, and racism is not excusable anymore. But with that, it has never been excusable. People are judgmental. I’m no saint in any way, but the amount of times I’ve seen random people in the school hallways picking on another person is extremely high. We, as people, have let our judgmental views consume us to the point of racism becoming worse again.
