Announcements for 1/31

Attention Baseball players not currently playing a winter sport: There will be open gyms for
any 9 th thru 12 th grader who is interested in trying out for high school baseball this year. The
first two open gyms will be held on Tuesday, February 7 th and Thursday, February 9 th . The
open gyms will be held from 3:15 PM – 5:00 PM for grades 11-12. The workout for grades
9-10 will be held from 5:00 PM – 6:45 PM. These workouts will take place at the Washington
& Jefferson Elementary Building. Players are asked to use the 4 th Street lower entrance only.
Please bring a glove and a bat if possible. A coach will be there to let you in.

If you are interested in attending virtual courses over the summer in Coding, then this
announcement is for you: “Girls who Code” has announced two free virtual programs offered
to current female students in 9 th grade through 11 th grade. Applications that are received prior
to February 16 th will receive priority consideration and regular-decision applications are due by
March 24, 2023. Please stop by the Literature rack outside of guidance for more information

Attention Seniors who are going on to post-secondary education to pursue a career in a
business-related field: The PA Association of Educational Office Professionals (PAEOP) is
announcing their Hermine Solt Student Scholarship. Complete details including criteria,
guidelines, and scholarship application can be found at PAEOP’s website, www.paeop.com,
under Awards & Scholarships, or stop by the Guidance Office literature rack. The deadline is
March 1 st .

Attention Seniors: Is someone in your immediate family on active duty? Or honorably
discharged from the military? If so, and you are planning on attending college or a trade
school and are looking for scholarships, this announcement is for you. Stop by the literature
rack outside of the guidance office and pick up an application for the Stephanine Risban
Scholarship. Application and essay must be submitted by March 31 st !

Attention Seniors: Are you the daughter or son of a Fireman or Law Enforcement Officer
looking for scholarships? If so, you might be interested in the PBFAA Scholarship which
awards $1,000 as a thank you for your parents’ dedication to the community. If you are
awarded this scholarship, you will automatically be entered in the ESA National Scholarship
Program which awards $12,000 for first place and $4,000 for second place.

Gettysburg College Jewish Studies Committee is awarding cash prizes of up to $1,000 during
their Fourth Annual Georges Lieber Essay Contest on Resistance. To qualify for a chance to
win you must write a 3,000-word essay regarding resistance currently going on in American
life, an international crisis or a personal issue and submit the essay electronically before
April 19 th . Please stop by the literature rack outside of the guidance office to get details.

Attention Seniors: The Altoona Rotary Club is offering a $1,500 Scholarship for graduating
seniors. Stop by the literature rack outside the guidance office to pick up an application.
Deadline to enter is March 20 th . Winners will be announced in mid-April and checks will be
awarded at a luncheon in May.

Anyone with information regarding Mickey Nedimyer’s whereabouts is asked to contact
Detective Wilson at the Altoona Police Department. Mickey has been missing for many weeks
and we are requesting any information that may lead to finding him.
