The movie “The Color Purple” was released to the public on Oct. 27, 2023, for the second time. The musical, set in Georgia in the early 1900s, was derived from the 1985 version of this movie.
There is a change from the book and previous movie which came before this one. Not only do audiences get the emotions and the authentic feeling from the book. They get the singing and dancing from the 1985 movie. A musical combined with a thriller makes it a great combination.
In the 1985 movie, there was a more serious and suspenseful tone. I felt it was harder to stay focused on the 1985 movie. However, during the 2023 movie, it was far easier for me to stay focused. The music and the catchy songs help to string it along while still having the same initial storyline. The scene where Harpo ( Corey Hawkins) is building a home for his wife Sofia (Danielle Brooks) was made as a filler, so it was more entertaining for audiences to watch while the house was being built.
The main character Celie (Fantasia Barrino) got the short end of the stick in life. Not only is she a black woman, but she also lives in a period where marrying children was legal. She gets separated from her sister at an early age and is forbidden from being able to contact her. Early on in the movie, we see Celie have an amazing bond with her younger sister, Nettie (Halle Bailey). The sisters being separated is the drive to this movie. There are many other side quests Celie must travel to become the best woman.
This movie is a great women empowerment stamp, which is another reason I love it. If you’re looking for serious, emotional, dramatic, empowering, and musical aspects in a movie, ”The Color Purple” 2023 version should most definitely be considered.
