On May 20, there will be an awards assembly for special scholarship recipients in the auditorium. Many families have created scholarships to honor deceased relatives that range up to $1,000. Other scholarships, such as the Horseshoe and Edna Neely scholarships, will be awarded to those who display great achievement. A number of other scholarships will be awarded for various reasons.
“This event is important because there is a lot of pride for Altoona and a lot of love for family,” assistant principal Vince Nedimyer said. “The loss of some was very tragic, and they get to keep the spirit of those people alive with these scholarships.”
These families and the recipients will be called down at 9:00 a.m .and will leave the auditorium before 11:00 a.m. Those giving scholarships have an opportunity to speak at the event.
