There is no Astronomy Club meeting this week, but that doesn’t mean the club isn’t making headlines. After nearly 100 students voted at last week’s meeting, the results are in! Your Astronomy Club officers are:
Mayor: Ava Cabell (MLTV: pronounced CAB-el)
Secretary: Reyna Ospina (MLTV: pronounced RAY-na o-SPEE-na)
Treasurer: Noah Hoenstine (MLTV: pronounced HO-en-stine)
Vice President: Brenna Tupone (MLTV: pronounced TOO-pone)
And your President for 2024-2025 is…Andrea Slusser!
Thanks to everyone who ran. Even though there is no meeting this week, don’t forget to turn your permissions slips and $5.00 in to Mr. Krug for our Haunted Fort Roberdeau planning trip the following week.
Attention anyone interested in 10th, 11th & 12th grade boys basketball: There will be an open gym for anyone in 10th, 11th and 12th grade who is interested in trying out for boys basketball this season on Wednesday, 9-18-24 at the Fieldhouse from 6:30 p.m. – 8 p.m. This is not a tryout. Attention Students: The Black Student Union will be holding its next meeting tomorrow, September 18 in Mrs. Stephen’s room, A229 right after school at 2:50 p.m. The Black Student Union is a club that was organized and started by students in 2020 to bring AAHS minority and African American students together as a group. The club’s mission is to increase acceptance of those who are diverse in the school, celebrate history, culture, and inclusion while educating and giving back to the school and community in a positive way. If this sounds like something that you’d be interested in, please consider joining the Black Student Union in A229. New members are always welcome!
Attention Juniors: Are you planning on attending college or a trade school after your senior year? If so, there is a scholarship opportunity for you NOW! Please stop by the Guidance office literature rack to pick up a Preliminary Scholarship Application for the Bud Lutty Scholarship Competition and send it in before the December 31, 2024 deadline.
Attention Students: The GSA (Hearts for Love) club is a safe space for those who need it, and we are planning on hosting our first official meeting on Thursday, September 19. We will be discussing back-to-school issues and some solutions for the LGBTQ+ community, among other things. The google classroom code is: grprz3b
Attention AAHS – are you a fan of Fall? Are you interested in sampling different kinds of apples, learning about fall harvests, and making fall crafts? Circle of Friends will be celebrating fall today in Miss Matteson’s room (B132). Please join us – it is not too late to become a member and there is no fee. The meeting will begin at 2:50 p.m. and end at 4 p.m. You will need a ride home.
Attention Seniors: Undecided about where to attend college? This week is a busy week for college visits. Please plan to stop by the visiting universities’ table between our 2 cafeterias to find out more information about their programs and campus life. Today will be Penn Highlands, Thursday is Penn State Altoona, and we will finish up the week with a visit from Saint Francis.
Seniors: You must raise money if you want to have an AfterGlo this year. This is your first opportunity to help out. The Claysburg Pizza fundraiser is now underway. If you sell $250 worth of Claysburg Pizzas, Strombolis, Cinnamon Rolls, Cheesy Garlic Breadsticks, and/or Handmade Pretzels, you will earn 1 Free Ticket to your AfterGlo. If you sell $400 worth of products, you will earn 2 Free Tickets. Please stop by Mrs. Irwin’s classroom – Room A334 to pick up the 2 forms or check out the email Mrs. Irwin sent to you with the forms attached. All order forms and money are due Friday, September 27.
Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test will be given at Altoona Area High School on Wednesday, October 30, 2024 and will cost $20. It is an important first step on the road to college. We recommend that juniors who are considering pursuing a four- year degree after high school sign up. We do not offer the exam to sophomores. ACA students signing up will be expected to test at Altoona Area High School. The test provides students with practice and insight into testing strategies, plus invaluable information for educational and career planning. In addition, the selection index given with the individual results qualifies academically superior students for scholarships and awards.
Registration ends September 23 through Total Registration
https://user.totalregistration.net/PSAT/390055.
The exam is open to the first 100 juniors who apply. After September 23 at 5 p.m., a $5.00 late fee will be charged. Late registrations end on September 23 at 7:00 p.m.
