It is officially the best time of the year: fall. With spooky season upon us, I have decided to dedicate this Book of the Month to some of the best books to read during the autumn season.
“The Housemaid” by Frieda McFadden:
To be completely honest, I haven’t enjoyed two of the three novels I have read by McFadden. However, “The Housemaid” is the exception.
Millie needs a fresh start. She takes a job as a housemaid for the Winchester family. All she has to do is clean, cook and watch after the Winchester’s daughter. However, things aren’t as perfect as they seem. Millie is happy with the money, but there is one thing making her uneasy. Her bedroom, located in the attic, only locks from the outside. The Winchester’s may have some secrets they are hiding, but Millie isn’t innocent either.
I could not put this book down. It is a perfect psychological thriller to read in one sitting. You’ll be engaged from page one.
“And Then There Were None” by Agatha Christie:
It would be a complete dishonor on Christie herself if I didn’t include one of her novels on this list. I have read three of her works and “And Then There Were None” is by far my favorite.
10 strangers receive an invitation to a remote island. Each person has a dark secret they are hiding. The host? No one knows. Soon enough, each of the 10 visitors begin dying off. The question remains: Who is the killer?
Christie is the ‘Queen of Mystery’ for a reason. This book is arguably her most popular, and I can’t help but agree. I loved every second of this novel. It is a quintessential fall classic to read this season.
“Caraval” by Stephanie Garber:
I will be the first to admit it. I don’t love “Caraval.” However, the vibes this fantasy has are immaculate for the season.
Two sisters are granted tickets to attend Caraval, a magical game that is as stunning as it is dangerous. As the sisters get swept up in the magical world of the game, secrets come to light, romance ensues and lives are on the line. It’s just a game… until it isn’t.
While I didn’t enjoy “Caraval,” Garber made me feel as though I was there in the game as well. A movie was playing in my head as I read. Fantasy isn’t my favorite genre, but this one is a pretty good place to start.
“My Roommate Is a Vampire” by Jenna Levine:
Would it really be a Book of the Month written by yours truly if I didn’t include a romance on this list?
“My Roommate Is a Vampire” might just be the cutest romance I have ever read. Cassie is in dire need of a place to live. When she finds a listing for a top of the line apartment for a cheap price, she takes the offer up. The only stipulation is that she has to live with the owner, Frederick J. Fitzwilliam. There is something about Fitzwilliam that doesn’t quite make sense. Yep, her roommate is quite literally a vampire.
I could not put this book down no matter how hard I tried. I absolutely loved it. If it hasn’t appealed to you yet, here is one last food for thought: Fitzwilliam is a Swiftie. I was in love before, but I was a goner when I read about his love for “1989.” With romance and comedy combined, “My Roommate Is a Vampire” is the perfect fluffy read for the spooky season.
