The Fine Arts Department hosted the student talent show on Nov. 15, 2024 at 7 p.m. There were 12 groups competing against each other in categories ranging from solos, duets and groups. The talent show began in 1998 and has been a tradition since.
Owen Carmel and Samara Wertz placed first, singing “The Song That Goes Like This” from “Spamalot.” Wertz was looking for a partner and asked Carmel because they both have a theater background. Carmel is also in chorus, specifically interested in composing his own songs.
“I write music so I was going to do one of my own songs, but I thought it’s more fun to do it with a partner and to have fun with it,” Carmel said.
When looking for a song choice, the duo wanted to enjoy the experience. Carmel saw “Spamalot” on Broadway and viewed it as hysterical. He had never attended a talent show and did not know the school had one. Carmel didn’t even know it was a competition.
“Samara looked at me saying we won, and I was so confused. I told her ‘We didn’t win anything, it’s not a competition’,” Carmel said. “Everyone did such a good job, I was so surprised.”
Seniors from the Fine Arts Department placed second, performing “When I Grow Up” from “Matilda.”
“I was really excited to perform in the talent show for my senior year, especially with my friends I have performed with since freshman year,” senior Jillian Pierannunzio said.
Gabrielle Beldin and Camille Krug placed third, singing “What Is This Feeling” from “Wicked.” The duet received third place at the 2023-2024 talent show and plans to perform another “Wicked” song next year.
“Since Camille and I are good friends I thought it would be funny to sing a song about not liking each other,” Gabrielle Beldin said.
There were four judges: Caleb Marsco, Natalie Trimmer, Larry Detwiler and Jacob Wilt. The Master of Ceremonies was Joe Murgo. Marasco has been a judge for three years.
“I really enjoy getting to see students excited about what they truly excel in,” Marasco said. “It’s my favorite part of teaching which is why I like to volunteer outside of the classroom for drama club and coaching.
