District band is a competition through the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA), and it’s a way for music students to compete. Rachel Kennedy plays the flute and will be competing on Jan.22.
“The directors of each festival that you are in, like either districts or regions or states, each has their own guest conductor, and that conductor or director gets to choose the music repertoire for the concert, and they typically choose a wide variety of pieces,”Kennedy said. “They like to include original marches, more slow songs and some exciting new pieces, brand new music that just enter the music realm and a wide variety of different things, so that hopefully every student can find some piece in the repertoire that they identify with, some piece that they enjoy doing, which is really nice, because it lets every festival be different, and it lets every festival, even if you don’t like one piece, there’s certainly something else in the folder that you can enjoy.”
Musicians within District 6 including Altoona, Hollidaysburg, Johnstown, Richland and more will be competing in a live audition process that will rank musicians based on their musicianship in several different categories.
