The gymnastics team has maintained a perfect record, leaving them undefeated since the beginning of the season. While they remain victorious, the team feels they could use more recognition.
This season the team consists of 11 gymnasts, five of which are seniors. The team’s record so far this year is 3-0.
“The team’s biggest accomplishment this season is working together and improving our skills,” senior Isabella Bush said.
The gymnastics team has been successful. They have managed to win every meet they have taken part in this year so far.
Even though the gymnastics team isn’t as big as other sports teams, many gymnasts believe they deserve the same amount of recognition and support as the other sports.
“We deserve more recognition because of the consistent effort and commitment we’ve shown,” Bush said. “Our accomplishments not only reflect our individual skills, but also contribute significantly to the team’s overall success.”
The team usually gets an attendance of about 40-50 spectators at home meets, which is lower compared to some other school sport events. Despite this, the team continues to compete with enthusiasm and dedication.
“I feel as if we don’t get enough recognition for all of the accomplishments we have had,” senior Zoe Weaver said. “We put the time and effort in just as any other sport.”
“I feel throughout the years the gymnastics team has gotten more recognition and I believe it should stay this way because we work hard during the season to prepare for states and keep the 15 year record of having an undefeated season going,” senior Emma Bettwy said.
While the gymnasts have voiced concerns about feeling underappreciated and underrecognized, they still are having a fun season filled with many challenges.
“My favorite part of being on the Altoona team is the bond built with teammates and how we all work as a team to have our best performances,” Bettwy said. “The hardest part of this year’s season for me was injuring my neck and now I can’t compete. I hope to be back by the end of the season.”
The other gymnasts feel the same way.
“My favorite part of the Altoona team is gaining more friends and making lots of memories,” Weaver said. “The hardest part this season is being on two different teams so I have double the practices and double the meets.”
The team has allowed for the girls to create bonds and friendships. These bonds are helpful in supporting each other through the challenges they face during the school year.
“My favorite part is the friendships I’ve made with my teammates,” Bush said. “The toughest part as a senior is balancing academics and extracurricular activities.”
