Black Veil Brides is a common name in the metalcore community and has been a prominent icon since their debut album called “We Stitch These Wounds.” From the soft, melancholic feel of “The Mortician’s Daughter,” to the heavy “Knives and Pens,” the album was released on July 20, 2010 and sold over 10,000 copies in the first week alone. Originally formed in Cincinnati in 2006, the band currently consists of Andy Biersack, (formerly by the stage name Andy Sixx,) Jeremy “Jinxx” Ferguson, Christian “CC” Coma and Lonny Eagleton. Anyone into the metal scene should definitely listen to the album, or even just the popular singles if they haven’t already.
The album consists of 12 songs, two singles and an additional bonus track. The album starts off with, “The Outcasts (Call to Arms)” Next, “We Stitch These Wounds,” “Beautiful Remains,” “Children Surrender,” “Perfect Weapon,” “Knives and Pens,” “The Mortician’s Daughter,” “All Your Hate,” “Heaven’s Calling,” “Never Give In,” “Sweet Blasphemy” and ending with “Carolyn,” in that order. The two singles being “Knives and Pens” and “Perfect Weapon,” the bonus track an acoustic version of “Knives and Pens.”
Even with the album’s smashing reception from fans, it still received criticism. Critics pointed out Biersack’s monotone vocals among the songs, but his voice only adds to the style. Another thing was the similarities between “Knives and Pens’,” and Avenged Sevenfold’s “Unholy Confessions’,” guitar riffs. Even with this judgement, the album still reached #36 in the Chart Billboard 200, and #1 Independent Release.
The best song from the album happens to be “The Mortician’s Daughter.” The song talks about moving on, as Biersack wrote it about his ex-girlfriend, Scout Taylor-Compton. With lyrics, “We booked our flight those years ago. You said you loved me as you left me,” the intention is evident. The song is acoustic and soft-paced, something so calm the listener would have never even expected a metal band member to have written it.
Even to this day, Black Veil Brides is still making music and touring around the world. In 2024, the band went on tour with Falling in Reverse, Asking Alexandria, Hollywood Undead and Dance Gavin Dance. They released a new EP titled “Bleeders” just last year, featuring three new songs. Just by listening, it’s evident how the band’s style has changed over the years yet still captures the original essence. So give it a shot, the music may change a life or two.
