Innovation is a major key to success in today’s NFL, and nothing proves it more than the Philadelphia Eagles signature “Tush Push” play. However, the play has become so successful over the years that it has become a topic of debate whether it should be banned or not.
The “Tush Push” is a short yardage play that is designed around two players (usually offensive lineman) pushing quarterback Jalen Hurts to gain a few yards needed for a first down or, if on the goal line, touchdown. The play is designed around strength and timing and if both are on point, the play is nearly unstoppable.
The “Tush Push” has an overall 97.9% conversion rate when factoring in attempts, almost always guaranteeing a first down or touchdown depending on the scenario, which leads to many conversations between players and coaches saying it should be banned due to the unfair advantage it gives the Eagles.
Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst was the first to plead for its ban, saying the play is not safe and lacks any real skill to perform. The “Tush Push” however has resulted in a 0% injury rate as of 2025, making his claim to the public a little questionable.
Others have come out saying the play shouldn’t be banned as it breaks no rules the NFL has set and it has already been around for four years. Other teams have tried to perform the play and have been unsuccessful in their attempts, leaving the Eagles as the only ones who have mastered it.
Head coach Nick Sirianni came out to reporters about the ban saying, “I almost feel a little insulted, because we work so hard on that play.”
It is unclear whether or not this ban will take place now but it is certain that the debate has drawn a lot of attention. Whatever the future is for the “Tush Push” will be a major discussion this NFL offseason.
