Spring sports have always provided athletes ways to take advantage of the weather turning from a harsh winter to a mushy spring. Some of the most popular being baseball and track.
However, both of these sports are completely dependent on how the weather feels that day, which is why volleyball should be given more opportunity. It’s a completely indoor sport that takes skill rather than pure athleticism.
Outside of any personal feelings for the sport, it’s great for working on somebody’s team building and communication skills. When volleyball is played, each player has to work together as a unit to try and score. Between passing, setting and communicating on the court, there’s no way to beat a team unless the players are working as a unit.
Another reason people constantly overlook volleyball is the fact they don’t take it seriously. The most they’ve ever been exposed to it would be as an activity to pass time in their gym class. Sadly, that’s all the farther some people will ever see it as, all because they never even attempted to look slightly past it.
Volleyball is a sport that with the right mindset, anyone can find success in. Working well in a team, communicating and effort are the parts that could bring someone to greatness in the sport.
Altoona’s volleyball program is especially enjoyable because of its great coaching staff and player mentality. During open gyms, some Altoona alumni who played volleyball come back to help try and foster a love for the sport for a new generation because they know how good it can be.
Overall, volleyball is an outstanding sport, overshadowed by two of the largest sports in the country. It can teach valuable life lessons, along with providing lifelong memories.
