Technology today is developing at an alarming rate. One new piece of technology that is being pushed into everyone’s face is artificial intelligence or A.I. for short.
Many companies are starting to replace their workers with A.I.. The people who are at the biggest risk of losing their jobs are artists, animators, writers and voice actors. Why would companies spend their money on hiring people when they can just type in a prompt and get what they want for free?
What companies don’t realize is that A.I. lacks one of the things consumers love the most: creativity. When something is generated by A.I., it is created from pre-existing media that is in its database and nothing new is created. It’s just a bunch of other people’s work sloppily mashed together to create something “new”. The worst part about this is that the people do not have a say in if their work can be used to train A.I..
Without any new ideas a lot of modern entertainment will get stale and boring. TV shows, movies, books, music and video games will be produced much faster, but the quality of these products will decrease drastically. If no new creative ideas are developed, then every piece of media will be the same few things over and over again with a different coat of paint.
Luckily, many Hollywood voice actors, writers, and animators went on strike because of this. They not only protested the use of A.I., but they also demanded higher wages and better working conditions. These people are responsible for making some of the greatest works of our time. They deserve respect, not only from companies, but also from the general public.
Big companies are not the only ones using generative A.I., regular people are using it too. Usually they aren’t using it with any malicious intent. However, even if it is something small like generating a funny image or making a fictional character or a celebrity sing a song, it still normalizes its use.
Regulations need to be put in place for A.I. If not, many people will lose their jobs and all of our sources of entertainment will become dull and boring.
