“If He Had Been With Me” is a very good book to read. The book has suspense, emotion and plot twists. The author Laura Nowlin shows kid’s mental health and what kind of battles they have.
The book is from the perspective of a teenage girl named Autumn Davis. It’s based on her going into high school and things changing with her friend group, boyfriend, home life, emotions and especially her childhood best friend Finny Nelson. The book really makes readers feel and understand her emotions and her seasonal depression.
Some things the author writes about in the book many teenagers could relate to. Throughout the book, Autumn struggles with her mental health, and they soon find out she has depression but hers only comes during winter, which is seasonal depression. She also deals with many problems like her parents splitting up, her dad not being around as much and how her boyfriend Jamie and bestfriend Sarah’s decisions change Autumn’s life. After this happens, their friend group all starts falling apart. Autumn didn’t want to be around Jamie or Sarah so she had to make the decision to distance herself from all her friends while they still all hung out without her. The book really does represent the reality of mental health and the struggles kids deal with.
“If He Had Been With Me” is a well put-together book that makes readers feel all of Autumn’s emotions and relate to her. If people read this book and like it, they can buy the book “If I Had Told Her” which is in Finny’s perspective.
