Nights Of Nights: Prom Approaching

With the end of the school year on the horizon, the planning of prom and Afterglo are well underway. With the prom theme and colors already picked out, as well as guest forms beginning to circulate, prom season is in full swing.

On March 10, Senior Executive Committee adviser Deidra Dumm sent a mass email to the junior and senior classes giving information about the themes of prom and Afterglo. This email marked the start of prom planning, and gave a large amount of information to help prepare.

Dumm and Afterglo adviser Paula Irwin had help from the Junior and Senior Executive Committees to plan out the whole night. Each member gave an idea. These ideas got narrowed down to three possible choices that got voted on, after which they went through the planning period adding new additions to this year’s dance.

“The prom is paid for using all fundraiser money,” Dumm said. juniors and seniors fundraise, typically at the beginning of the year, to cover the total cost. The cost of prom is typically $10,000-$15,000.”

Memory Miracles: Prom Information

The theme this year is ‘Tangled in our Memories’ with the colors being dark purple, lavender and gold. Prom is scheduled to take place at the Blair County Convention Center and is a formal event. Guests will be entering through the main entrance and led through metal detectors, where any small bags brought will be searched. No one will be permitted to enter after 8 p.m..

“I like the idea of an optional themed dance,” junior Archer Makarikas said. “ Everyone won’t be able to fit the theme obviously, but it’s nice to have sort of a specific feel when choosing suits or dresses for prom.”

Vendors have already been contacted by Dumm and the Executive Committees.

Last year, a photo booth was introduced at the dance, allowing students to take pictures and capture memories before the year ended. This year, a new addition has been made: a 360 photo booth. Students will have the opportunity to stand on the booth and take videos of themselves.

Shimmer and Shine: Afterglo Information

Afterglo is an informal event meant to be a wind-down party after prom. It was implemented in the 1950’s. It was originally run by parents, but was taken over by the school after the 2000’s. Over the years it remained relatively the same with the event taking place at Lakemont Park each year.

Some of these activities include mini-golf, batting cages, basketball courts, volleyball courts, yard games, ice skating (with free rental) and a photo booth. All of these activities are free for seniors to enjoy.

“It’s hard,” Irwin said. “ Without the park having the rides that it used to, it doesn’t have as much draw. We have Galactic Ice too, where they can go ice skating. And even if we had it here at the school, there’s not a whole lot we can do.”

Outfit Outlook: Student Dresses and Suits

With information being out about the theme and color scheme it leads students into planning their outfits. With many places to look for outfits it leads to the question of where they can be bought.

One option is Rachel’s Closet. They have many dresses with new ones coming in frequently. These dresses are completely free. The closet is open during 6-8 periods.

“We have a lot of options,” community service worker Lucie Jones said. “However, they do sell out quickly. The dresses are very pretty, we have a bunch of sizes and a bunch of colors.”

Kissprom is a good place for prom dresses. They have a plethora of gowns for all sorts of styles. Though it is only dresses and nothing for men, the dresses could be a good choice for a prom outfit.

“I mainly chose it because I was just looking at dresses,” senior Kiera Stoltenberg said. “ It had what I liked: a soft purple, butterflies, a slit anda corset kind of look.”

Zapaka is a website specializing in prom outfits, offering a variety of outfits with intricate designs and vibrant colors. The site features sleek finishes and silk dresses that appeal to those looking for elegant options for formal occasions.

“I chose Zapaka because I was looking for something from the roaring 20s,” senior Jackson Dalton said. “I find the old aesthetic pretty and fun to express through fashion and color.”
