The debate over whether a jersey should include a player’s last name is one of the most controversial topics among athletes, coaches and fans. The jersey should display the player’s last name, as it represents who the player is—both on and off the field.

At the high school level, many athletes are playing with serious aspirations, hoping to earn college scholarships and take their game to the next level. These students strive to stand out by performing at their highest potential. Having last names on jerseys would help scouts and recruiters identify players more easily—not just for their athletic performance, but also for how they carry themselves during the game and on the sidelines. It would give young athletes a sense of identity and accountability. When a name is on the back of a jersey, players are reminded that every play they make reflects their character.

Beyond exposure, having a name on the back of a jersey can be a huge morale booster. When players see their names stitched into their uniforms, it instills a sense of pride. They aren’t just representing their school—they’re representing themselves, their families and their communities. This deeper connection can strengthen their purpose and drive them to work harder and take ownership of their role on the team. It can also inspire younger players who look up to them, showing that hard work earns recognition.

Including names on jerseys could also benefit schools financially. Just as colleges sell merchandise that highlights popular athletes, high schools could adopt a similar approach. Selling jerseys that feature individual players could generate extra income—money that could go toward better equipment, upgraded uniforms or improved facilities for all sports teams. It could also increase fan engagement, making families and friends feel more personally connected to the team.

Names on jerseys can be a lasting symbol of respect. This year, our school experienced a heartbreaking loss when a female soccer player who wore number 1 passed away. Her jersey, now retired, has become much more than a piece of clothing—it’s a tribute. Her number stitched on that jersey carries deep meaning, honoring her legacy and reminding everyone of who she was and her impact. If she were to have her name on her jersey, who knows how much more potential her memory could have?

“It’s the memories of her and what she reminds everybody of, what Lundyn gave to a community in all of her assets to the team and our community of the school,” freshman girls’ soccer player Lilyahna Wisor said.
