On April 1 and April 3, 2025, an in person Lioneer tryout was held in the AAHS fieldhouse. Upcoming freshmen, sophomores and juniors were eligible to try out. Lioneer Coach Julie Schmoke held these tryouts.
“We do the dance we were taught in front of judges in groups of three,” sophomore Marlette Hott said. “On Tuesday, we learned the dance and practiced it until we knew it, and on Thursday, we did the dance in groups of three in front of judges to see if we made the team. Schmoke also asked people if anyone could tumble then those who could, did their tricks.. A single turn and a leap for actual skills as a dancer is what was expected.”
A panel of three judges watched the auditions. All three were brought in.
“It’s just fun making the team again, and I can’t wait for my junior season as a Lioneer,” Hott said. “Football season is what I’m looking forward to because everything about it is so fun, especially the atmosphere.”
Most of the Lioneers are more excited for football season than basketball season because the student section is more hype.
“We practice hard and make sure our dances and cheers are ready and clean for the games to get ready for this upcoming season,” Hott said.
Practices started Tuesday, April 22 for the new season.
“My favorite part about last season was my freshman friends got on the team and I got to be with them so much and this year will be even better,” Hott said.
Captain tryouts are at the end of the school year, for upcoming seniors who want to help Schmoke take the role in leading the team.
