Over the years, certain sports have been forgotten, added or changed for different athletic teams. Hockey, though, has not been treated very fairly by the school. Although it is quite a popular sport among students, there is actually no hockey team. Instead of a team, hockey is considered a club sport, meaning students can not use their resources at the school if they want to join the team. This can make it harder for students who would like to play on the hockey team as there are many different details that go into joining a club sport. This is why hockey should be a school sport rather than a club sport.
Hockey should be a school sport rather than a club sport because all students should have accessibility to it if they want to join the team, so it can be inclusive for everyone, and so that students who do play club hockey can have more of a balance in their academic and athletic life. If students could play hockey for their school rather than a club, they would have a better balance of their academic and athletic lives.
Hockey becoming a school sport would help promote school spirit in the hockey players as well as hockey fans. Hockey games could help bring communities in the school together and bring in support from the school and outside of the school. Hockey becoming a school sport could also help to improve the academic performances of students who would play for the team, as they would have to maintain academic eligibility rather than solely focusing on their sport separate from their school life and work. Students who play club hockey may also feel a stronger sense of pride in their school and their sport if they were playing for the school instead of an outside club.
Some may argue that bringing hockey into the athletics department would be too expensive, lowering the budget for other sports teams in the school district. A simple fix to this issue would be the use of fundraisers throughout the hockey season, providing funds for the team while also promoting it. Another argument may be the school does not have an ice rink which limits the availability of practices and can be difficult for students that may want to join the team but do not have transportation. While this is true, the local ice rink could be used for days that practice is needed, again utilizing fund raisers. Students that may want to join but do not have transportation could ask a fellow teammate for a ride or even their coach.
So, instead of hockey being a club sport rather than a school sport, all students should have accessibility to it if they want to join the team. It can be inclusive for everyone, and students who do play club hockey can have more of a balance in their academic and athletic life.
