During the week of April 22, faculty and staff at the high school participated in an underground theme week. Social studies teacher Carolyn Kline organized the event after finding inspiration for it on social media.
“I saw several examples of different theme ideas on Facebook and Instagram,” Kline said. “I wanted to see a sense of having some fun at the school.”
Kline then sent out the information to all staff in the building to take part in.
“I did see several teachers up here on our third floor of the B building taking part in the themes,” Kline said. “Unfortunately, I don’t get off of this floor often, so I am not sure who all participated.”
These theme days included: Dress in All Black, Drink out of Anything Besides a Mug, Wear All Denim and Dress Like the Year You Graduated High School.
Several teachers took part in this event throughout the building. Their main goal was to execute these themes each day without students catching on.
“Mrs. Kline is always trying to build school spirit and make school a little more fun,” physics teacher David Borst said. “I wanted to help make it a little more fun than just going to school.”
Borst enjoyed the theme days he took part in, and thought it was fun to see the students figure it out.
“My favorite theme day was the denim day,” Borst said. “I felt that was easy for me to find within my wardrobe. I also brought a crazy, space looking thing to drink out of for the mug day.”
Math teacher Dan Harber brought a boot to drink out of for Drink out of Anything Besides a Mug day.
“I wanted something silly for that day,” Harber said. “I don’t think anybody else had the boot idea. I definitely did not see any other boots. I think some of the kids definitely got some kicks out of it, and some were a little weirded out.”
Teachers believe they held onto their secret for the first few days, but shortly after students began to catch on.
“I don’t think many kids noticed what we were doing on the first day,” Kline said. “We all wore all black and some students may have noticed it, but didn’t quite know why it was. The day I saw students noticing was when we drank out of anything but a mug.”
Kline hoped this week would bring some joy to staff and students as the end of the school year approaches.
“I wanted to see a sense of unity within the school through these themes,” Kline said. “I hoped to see the teachers all take part, and then see if any of the students could figure out what was going on.”
