Q&A with Kelly Sipes
Q: What legacy do you hope to leave at AAHS?
A: I hope I have instilled a love for music that lasts a lifetime for my students - whether they continue to sing in ensembles, teach music, or attend events with a better appreciation for music. I also hope that my students continue to have pride in themselves and the music they create together - and they continue to hold themselves to high standards so that the strong program we have continues to flourish.
Q: What advice can you offer to your students?
A: I hope that my students continue to believe in themselves. They are such incredible people with so much potential. I hope they cherish the memories that we have made, but also keep an open mind to new ideas and experiences the new choral director may have to offer.
Q: What song do you feel sums up your time at AAHS?
A: That's a tough one. We've been singing through so many favorites in Vocal Ensemble this past week. Although we didn't perform it, "For Good" from Wicked comes to mind: "I have been changed for good." My students have touched my life in such a positive way and I hope I have also touched theirs.
Q: What is your favorite Vocal Ensemble memory?
A: Some of my favorite moments have been touring, cookie decorating and karaoke and the pride we had as an ensemble while performing at IUP's "Calvacade of Choirs." One of the top memories might be singing in the stairwell.
Q: Is there anything else you would like to add?
A: I want to thank my students for trusting me to lead them - for their hard work and dedication and willingness to take risks in order to become a better version of themselves. I truly enjoyed working with them everyday and hope that was evident. They brightened my day. Saying goodbye to this incredible group of young people is not easy. They have made chorus more than just singing - they've built a community that supports one another and inspires others to do their best. They are a family. A part of my heart will always be with this choir.
