Sophomore plans next step

Introduction to Publication students designed magazine covers to feature journalism students. Jaidyn Green designed this cover to feature Rylie Keagy.

Fifteen year-old Rylie Keagy is taking on her sophomore year while being in multiple activities.

Keagy didn’t quite know where she wanted to go. Dance helped her inspiration for her future career.

“I think when you think about what you want in your life you really want to imagine not only what is going to benefit you but what you’re going to really enjoy doing. I think that dance has inspired me and showed me that I can get both of what I want in my future,” Keagy said.

Dance has been a big part of Keagy’s life for 13 years. Ballet and jazz were the start of her dance journey. Keagy expanded her knowledge and learned other types of dance.

“When you do go to as many competitions as a competitive dancer, you have to know everything. So taking classes for everything just really helps and to get anywhere and living through a professional you have to come from everywhere,” Keagy said.

Being on yearbook staff and Lioneers can help with college in many ways. Keagy has both of those school programs to help her throughout the years. This is her first year on the yearbook staff. She has also been dancing on the Lioneers for two years now. While doing these school curriculums she manages to maintain grades in honors classes.

“Being on the yearbook staff many people see it as like picture taking and visits. But it’s also about writing captions and when you want to get into college you can write essays. And having all this background knowledge could help me use this for future essays in college. And Lioneers could help team wise like bonding, everything else performing,” Keagy said.

Managing yearbook staff, Lioneers and honors classes is something Keagy takes on in her sophomore year. Keagy uses time management to keep track of everything she needs to continue being successful.

“Knowing what is best for you and knowing how much you can take and when you can hang out with friends because there’s not a lot of time for that,” Keagy said.

Keagy also enjoys going to concerts. Being able to go to concerts now is a very hard task for Keagy in between paper deadlines and also dance practice.

“I’ve made sure all my homework is done because homework and along with dance is a big priority for me.  So I normally don’t do things unless everything is done. When I was little I went to Shawn Mendes, I went to James Arthur, I went to Harry Styles. I went to Five Seconds of Summer. Also I went down to a summer festival with Justin Bieber, and it was gorgeous,” Keagy said.

She often enjoys reading books. Books often take her a longer time to read due to little free time. Keagy finds herself to be a hopeless romantic, So different types of books interest her.

“I really liked the ‘Summer I Turned Pretty’ series. That is a really good one I have like, ‘We Were Liars’. And every summer after, those are probably like my top three. They really just tell a great story to me. They incorporate a little bit of everything and they’re not just sore on one subject,” Keagy said

Yearbook was a class for Keagy in eighth grade. But for ninth grade year, Keagy decided to take Intro to Publication. Keagy decided the more knowledge the better for yearbook staff. Tenth grade year Keagy has taken on the yearbook staff.

“It’s an adventure. It’s really fun. It can get really busy at times. But there’s so many fun and free opportunities that it brings, and learning new things,” Keagy said.
