In Tune [#4]

December 12, 2022

Hi guys, welcome back to In Tune! This week is going to be way different from what I’ve done before. Instead of normal ratings, I wanted to form a story with songs and make a structured story album. To be honest, I saw a video on TikTok by elsienotelisee containing an in depth rating of New Magic Wand by Tyler, The Creator and the story behind that song alone inspired me to make a story with songs.

Starting off, if someone is unaware of the story of New Magic Wand, it’s a song about an ex lover not being over their old lover and basically being aggravated they have a new boyfriend or girlfriend. So this “album” of songs will be a romance based playlist. Also, there are two perspectives to this made up love album. So I will refer to the characters as Perspective one and two, or person one and two respectively.

Every relationship starts with meeting each other, right? So for perspective one, their song is “Glimpse of Us” by Joji. This song is super sad and what I would love to call a typical reminiscing of a breakup song. So what does that mean? Person one had just gotten out of a relationship and views person two as just a flashback to their previous love. How intriguing is that? For person two, their song would be “Looking Out for You” by Joy Again. This song is a total 180 from “Glimpse of Us”. “Glimpse of Us” is a person who is in love with someone who basically won’t “look” at that person, or person two. So that’s our first connection. Person two adores person one but person one is still stuck on their past love; and that’s the beginning meeting of the two.

Next in this story relationship it would have the friendship, of course. Perspective one is based off “Can I Call You Tonight?” by Dayglow. This song is very closed off, the singer loves someone but doesn’t know when or how to speak up about their love. I think this person is more scared of their last relationship, hence “Glimpse of Us” as well. Perspective two is “Thinkin Bout You” by the one and only, Frank Ocean. If I’m being honest, I don’t know the true meaning of this song but I interpret it as someone just being in love with someone. There’s very few complications in this song aside from when Frank sings that he doesn’t love them he just thinks they’re cute. So, big reveal, perspective two is still very much in love with perspective one but is just a wee bit confused with how perspective one is hiding their feelings.

Here’s the second most juiciest part, in my ever so humble opinion. The part where they acknowledge their love and get together. Perspective one is dedicated to “this is what falling in love feels like” by JVKE. Person one has that harsh past with being stuck on the old lover but, this song takes that all away and throws it out the door. This song is an absolute dreamy song and even mentions “throwing away the past”. Person one is so in love and open about their love now. Perspective two is similar, they have a strong love and passion for perspective one with “Marlboro Nights 2” by Lonely God and midwxst. This song can be seen as a total cutsey and love enhanced song but, I’m taking it as a love-bomb kind of song. Person two loves person one but, is it really a good love? Absolutely not, they’re borderline toxic. Midwxst even sings at some point, “I think you’re my kryptonite” which leads it perfectly into the toxic love. Although, this song is so amazing and I think it’s a thousand times better than the original song. I say everyone should add it to their playlists.

Next up for person one and two is the falling out. To make things really ironic, perspective one’s song is “Fallin Out of Love With You” by Montell Fish, who has beyond amazing songs, might I add. The song is just about as typical as it gets, it’s the same as the title. Person one is falling out of love with person two and is tired of this lover. Alas, perspective two is not going to like this. Person two has “clementine” by grentperez. If there’s a song that’s going to be on my Spotify wrapped next year, it’s going to be this song. This song is by far my favorite for this month and it just had to get mentioned in an In Tune and it matches ever so perfectly. Grentperez sings about his lover throwing it all away but he still loves them. If this isn’t a person two moment, I wouldn’t know what it is. This song is insanely good and fits perfectly with person two’s feelings, as they’re still in love with person one.

Even though person two is still madly in love with person one, the feelings are not the same for person one. The inevitable break up is initiated with a song by Kali Uchis; specifically, “Dead To Me. Kali sings about someone being obsessed with her but she doesn’t feel the same and says that this person is about as good as dead to her. This represents person one perfectly, as they’re realizing that person two is just an obsessive, love-bombing scoundrel. Perspective two is perfect for the song, “ARE WE STILL FRIENDS?” by Tyler, The Creator. The whole song and even person two’s feelings are about them still being friends. [How corny is that?] Person two [and Tyler] don’t want to end everything on a bad note, even though the other person does. The true mess of falling out has only just started.

What about the aftermath? This is about as messy as a relationship nowadays. Person one’s song is Exit Music (For A Film) by Radiohead. This song is about as music for an extremely sad scene as it gets. I can imagine this as the untimely demise of person one. There’s not much to this song, just some mumbly lyrics. Then, we have “NEW MAGIC WAND” by Tyler, The Creator. This song is about a person, queue person two, who is obsessive and is willing to kill or harm someone to get their lover back. This is a good representation of our story because of the untimely demise of person one then the malicious intent, to word it nicely, of person two.

That’s all for this volume of In Tune! I hope you enjoyed it!
