Taste test. Reporters Jordan Hescox and Megan Shultz try foods from both Sheetz and Rutter's. Ultimately, it's decided that Sheetz is the better option (Megan Shultz and Jordan Hescox)

On Tuesday, March 5, Rutter’s opened up a new gas station located at 432 Sabbath Rest Road,. This created a lot of competition for surrounding Sheetz stores which are both within a three-mile radius of Rutter’s. On Saturday, March 23, a reporter from the BA Blueprint and a reporter from the Mountain Echo decided to try foods from both Sheetz and Rutter’s.

During our ride to Sheetz, we decided to review the chicken, mac and cheese and the Cookies ‘n Cream milkshake from both of the stores. After walking in, we headed over to the MTO station to place our order. We had a coupon for a free specialty drink, which we used on a regular-sized Cookies ‘n Cream shake. After ordering a 5-piece of chicken strips and the 3-Cheese mac, our total came to $13.98. Right after receiving our order from Sheetz, we hopped in the car and drove down the road to Rutter’s.

At Rutter’s, we used their version of the MTO station to order our food. We ordered a regular Cookies ‘n Cream shake, a 3-piece of chicken strips and mac and cheese. Rutter’s didn’t have the option of 3-Cheese, so white cheddar mac and cheese was what we went with. Our total for the three items came to $14.91, however, we didn’t have a coupon for a free drink at Rutter’s. Once we got our food, we headed to the parking lot to compare the items.

Chicken tenders. We rated the chicken based off of the appearance, taste and smell.
Chicken tenders

Jordan’s review: I tried the chicken tenders from Rutter’s when they first opened at this location and it was overcooked, so my expectations weren’t high this time around. When I bit into it, the breading was super crunchy. It had a crisp, slightly overcooked taste to it. There was a lot more breading on the chicken than I had expected there to be. I think it was just crispy because it was burnt. The Sheetz chicken is easier to eat because it isn’t so crunchy to bite into. With Sheetz, there is more meat on the chicken than there is at Rutter’s. Overall I would say Rutter’s is a 6/10 and Sheetz’s is a 7/10.

Megan’s review: Right off the bat, I noticed that Rutter’s chicken tenders have a dark breading that almost looks burnt, which is a little bit concerning. The Sheetz breading is lighter and looks more appealing. Biting into the Rutter’s chicken was different because it was a lot crunchier than I had expected but it didn’t have a burnt flavor at all. It tasted like the type of crisp and flavorful chicken that you’d get at a restaurant and I love that. The Sheetz chicken wasn’t as hard. It’s easier to eat in that aspect and it doesn’t fall apart like the Rutter’s chicken did. Overall, I would give the Rutter’s a 7.5/10 and Sheetz a 9/10.

Mac and cheese. We got white cheddar Mac and cheese and a 3-Mac and rated them against each other.
Mac and cheese

Jordan’s review: Rutter’s took a big hit off the bat by not giving us silverware to eat our mac and cheese with. Megan suggested that the white cheddar looked like Panera mac and cheese. After taking a bite, it’s clear that it isn’t truly Panera. The cheese from Rutter’s wasn’t as thick, it was still good though. There was an option to add in bacon bits, but we chose to do it plain. With those added in, it would be the perfect mac and cheese. I don’t get the 3-Mac often, so it’s a lot cheesier than I remember. I like the noodles in this one. They give it more structure like it’s more firm. For me, Sheetz is going to be a 7/10 and Rutter’s is going to be an 8/10.

Megan’s review: I am a loyal fan of Sheetz 3-cheese mac. I am trying not to be biased while rating, but they are both different kinds of cheese which makes it difficult to compare. I think that Rutter’s mac and cheese resembles Panera. My first reaction: WOW. Panera dupe! The cheese is very thick and full of flavor. Bonus points because the pasta is conchiglie which seems fancier. The best part of the Sheetz mac and cheese is the layer of straight cheese on the top. The cheese on this one is not as thick as Rutter’s. It’s hard for me to rate these two because the 3-Mac has been my favorite mac and cheese for so long now. I couldn’t decide which one I liked more, so I’m going to play it safe and rate them both a 10/10.

Milkshakes. We got two regular-sized Cookies n Cream shakes and judged them both.
Cookies ‘n Cream milkshakes

Jordan’s review: When I look at the milkshake from Rutter’s, it just looks like a chocolate shake, whereas you can tell that the Sheetz milkshake is Cookies ‘n Cream. With the Rutter’s milkshake, the Oreo taste is there, but it’s just a hint of flavor. It’s almost like it was watered down. The Sheetz milkshake is where it’s at. It does taste chocolatey but that’s probably because an Oreo is a chocolate cookie. Sheetz was amazing, I’ll give it a 9.2/10, but nothing beats their vanilla shake with peanut butter cups. Rutter’s is a 6/10. I was expecting better out of it.

Megan’s review: Sheetz looks more appealing to the eye because they went the extra mile to put cookie crumbs into the whipped cream, however, Rutter’s milkshake is bigger. I started by taking a sip of the Rutter’s milkshake, it wasn’t an immediate burst of flavor. It was honestly kind of subtle at first. Then I moved on to try the Sheetz version of the milkshake. Two words: NOT IMPRESSED. It took me forever to even take a sip because it was too thick. When I finally did get some, there were ice chunks in it. Not to mention, it tasted more like a chocolate milkshake than a Cookies ‘n Cream milkshake. I’d give Rutter’s a 7/10 and Sheetz a 4/10.

It’s hard to pinpoint why Sheetz is better than Rutter’s, or vice-versa because both gas stations have good and bad things about them. However, we do have a bit of a bias by saying that Sheetz is a fan favorite for us. This might have been a harder say if Rutter’s didn’t take 17 minutes to give us our order.
