The year is 2010, Michelle Obama is going to try and propose a bill to stop giving too many portions in school meals and lower the calorie count. The bill is called Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act which gives the USDA the authority to set new standards for food sold in lunches during the regular day including vending machines. It also authorizes additional funds for the new standards for federally-subsidized school lunches and provides resources for schools and communities to utilize local farms and gardens to provide fresh produce. Then it provides resources to increase nutritional quality of food provided by the USDA and sets minimum standards for school wellness policies. It also limits milk served to nonfat flavored milk or 1 percent white milk and reduces portion sizes in meals. Additionally, it mandates a minimum on fruit, vegetables and whole grain servings. Last, according to Wikipedia, it mandates a maximum sodium, sugar, and fat content.
I have an issue with all of this. We were given 4.5 billion dollars for school lunches. And we’re given terrible lunches that most of the kids don’t like. Like today we had Nashville hot chicken which I didn’t like. I had Cheez Its, which isn’t a full-filling meal. Don’t get me wrong, there are other food options, but they have to be within a certain boundary, such as whole wheat bread, low calories and low salt content. So there was nothing else that was filling that I liked. Then our fruit options that are given aren’t the best either, like they’re not super fresh and not super appealing. So I think if we want to stay within the boundaries, still we should have three good meals a week or have alternate things that cost money such as pretzels, nachos or some ice cream. The only thing is the kids would pay money for them, so the school would benefit and the kids would at the same time. We could even have off campus stores like McDonalds, Chick Fil A, or Chipotle.
