Dear Editor,
Although many junior and senior students did not like it, I personally think that we should bring back Genius Hour.
The idea of Genius Hour is to encourage creativity, critical thinking and a love of learning by allowing students to choose what they want to research or create. It can also involve anything from coding and art to science experiments and social issues.
If we would bring genius hour back to our school, it would encourage students to think outside the box and pursue their interests, enhancing their creative thinking skills.
Genius Hour would also help students work on projects they’re passionate about; they are more motivated and engaged in their learning. The school would also have the resources to help the students with their projects.
A third reason why I think Genius Hour should be implemented back into the school system is that Genius Hour can create a more dynamic and positive learning environment, where students feel valued for their interests inside of the school building.
My final reasoning of why I think Genius Hour should be implemented back into the school is that Genius Hour gives students the opportunity to take charge of their learning. They learn to set goals, manage their time and seek out resources, which fosters a sense of responsibility in the classroom/school building.
Even though many students have disliked it in the past, I personally believe that the school should give the thought of Genius Hour another chance, but this time they should try to approach it in a different way then just giving the students just a whole day of nothing.
A way that they could approach it is instead of having students do a bunch of random stuff like they had us do at the beginning of the school year what they should do is try to do what they did at the end of the year like have the students apply for permission to go to a teacher and have them help the student out with his or her project.
Sincerely, Haiden Frederick
