Life Skills teacher Paige Matteson is also new this year, experiencing her first year of teaching at a high school.

Before graduating, Matteson taught as a student teacher at State College for grades second through fifth, helping with learning, emotional and behavioral support. She had a practicum experience in Life Skills at Juniata Valley High school, something she enjoys teaching.

“I have always wanted to be a teacher. In high school, I volunteered in a contained Special Education classroom which solidified my decision to major in Elementary and Special Education,” Matteson said.

Despite not graduating from Altoona, Matteson has always had a love for the school district.

“Even though I’m a Hollidaysburg graduate, I grew up in the Altoona School District family. My mom and aunt are both teachers for the district and I knew this is where I wanted to teach. I was beyond excited when I found out I was teaching high school,” Matteson said.

For Matteson, she is only temporarily teaching face-to-face classes at the Junior High. With her classes, Matteson tries her best to make her learning environment friendly and positive, even if she struggles with early mornings.

“…I am not a morning person. A cup of coffee and knowing I get to work with my students is what gets me out of bed. [In my classes,] I try to keep things upbeat and positive. Learning should be fun,” Matteson said.

Matteson went to Juniata College where she majored in Special Education and Elementary Education. At Juniata, Matteson kept herself busy with various activities outside of school. Most of these activities Matteson continues today whenever she isn’t teaching.

I am an avid baker and my specialty is definitely cake pops. I love to sing and travel. At Juniata, I was a member of their choir and we traveled to four continents and seven countries. Two of the most interesting places I’ve visited are Morocco and Vietnam. Swimming laps is one of my favorite ways to relax,” Matteson said.
