Diversity Equity and Inclusion Statement
We strive to report school news accurately, vividly, and in a way that encapsulates what it is like to be an Altoona Mountain Lion. However, this goal will only be accomplished if we include all voices in the school community.
Diversity:
In order to understand the entire story, it is imperative that journalists at the Mountain Echo interview a diverse array of students, faculty, staff and community members, as well encourage underrepresented student voices to become journalists.
Equity:
At the Mountain Echo, we are constantly working towards correcting our prejudices. Like all students, reporters have blindspots and biases; unlike most students however, journalists have more influence on presenting what is truth. Due to this great responsibility, Mountain Echo journalists are expected to learn, deconstruct and grow from their biases and blindspots that can harm minority and marginalized students, faculty, staff and community members.
Inclusion:
Of course no student interested in being a journalist will ever be turned away on account of their race, sex/gender, color, religion, sexual orientation or national origin. However, we understand that we must do more in order to foster an organization that is truly inclusive for all. We will strive to advertise for our staff and make sure 100% of the school community is aware of the Introduction to Publications Course and encourage enrollment. We will work with other organizations in the school community to encourage letters to the editor and guest writing.
