Montgomery guides Mountain Echo newswriting staff

If someone looked in the center of most publications they would find an editor. The senior high’s newspaper team allows students to have their voices amplified throughout the school. The Mountain Echo is a student led staff where journalists, photographers and editors work together.

Senior Destiny Montgomery is the editor in chief of the Mountain Echo. Her job is to provide strength and structure to the newspaper class. She mentors freshman students and works alongside adviser Wanda Vanish in publishing stories.

Montgomery’s passion for writing has always been present in her life. She feels that writing has been something she has excelled in since early childhood.

“I think that I just have good writing abilities and good communication skills and that helps me reach people not only in school but also outside of school,” Montgomery said.

She was on the Livewire staff her freshman year and has been on the Mountain Echo staff  since her sophomore year. She explains she has made many relationships in the classroom. Former senior Ben Blackie was the editor before her.

“He was super nice, and I think that he did a super good job editing. I’m hoping to build off of everything that he’s done so far,” Montgomery said.

As editor she works closely with the reporting staff. Members of the Mountain Echo staff feel very connected to her.

“She really takes the lead and makes sure everything is in line and doesn’t really fall out of place. She never lets anyone fail and plays a really good leader role,” sophomore Lilian Roberts said.

“Destiny is really down-to-earth when she’s editing. She always says what needs to be said. But she’s very understanding of our mistakes because she knows that she also makes mistakes too,” senior Connor George said.

Montgomery believes that being an editor means sticking to your job and being reliable. She loves to write and she loves to understand the way people work. She spends four periods of her school day in the publication room and is grateful for the future of opportunities brought to her by her time on the publication staff.
