The Altoona Area Public Library offers free educational, informational and entertainment resources to the city of Altoona. Library staff members have plans to outreach resources to the community in the new year.

Workshop Egyptian Stone Inscription for teens will take place at the library Jan. 28 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. At the class attendees will learn about the history of Egypt and its communications. Students will also inscribe their name into their own stone tablet using hieroglyphics.

The class is run by circulation staff member Sean Sifford.

“It [Egyptian History] has always been an interest to me so since I knew a lot about it already I wanted to share that with the community, ” Sifford said.

Creating educational programs for teens using library resources is one of the library’s biggest goals for 2022.

“I think the really great thing about studying any history really is you get to see how people of those times are facing problems that really aren’t so different from ones we’re facing today,” Sifford said.

Adult circulations supervisor Rachel Mabb wants more teens to be aware of programs the library has for them. Tutor.com is a tool at the library and is available now.

“It’s a service we’ve had for over a year at the library, it is a tutoring site where students only have to have a library card to log in and seven days a week from 3-10 p.m. they can get free one-on -one tutoring help,” Mabb said.

The site offers help with topics from grade school English to advanced calculus.

“If your parents or a guardian, brother or sister are like nope that’s not my subject and it’s 9 p.m. and the assignments due tomorrow bam you can get help to understand it better,” Mabb said.

The library welcomes everyone to spread the word of teen and adult resources.
