Rainbow Six Extraction review and overview
February 1, 2022
Rainbow Six Extraction is the latest game produced by Ubisoft. Extraction made its grand appearance on Jan. 20 2022, and enticed thousands of Rainbow Six Siege players to try it out on the first few days of the launch. Extraction has surpassed over three million players within the first week alone and is still growing.
A deadly and dangerous alien parasite has landed on earth and is destroying America. An agency known as React has been deployed to stop this threat and destroy the parasite.
Extraction is a purely PvE (player vs. environment) game and puts a team of three operators against the Achaeans (pictured in featured image). The game has 13 missions which are referred to as incursions. As of now, each incursion brings a different challenge for the player to overcome and beat with up to two other players to join them in. There are four current zones in the game: New York, San Francisco, Alaska and the last one called ‘Truth or Consequences’ which takes place in New Mexico. Extraction has four difficulty levels. Depending on the difficulty level you pick, it makes a large difference in gameplay in terms of strategy needed to succeed. Each operation has three incursions. It will pick a random three out of the 13 possible incursions. The game allows you to exfil; this allows the player to leave at any stage as long as they can make it to the extraction zone and save XP. The player will complete the first given incursion and proceed through the airlock to get to the next incursion, then repeat for the last incursion. The player can fail an incursion and still continue to further stages, but they will not receive XP for that incursion. At the end of the three incursions, the players will exfil and receive their XP depending on how many of the three incursions they successfully completed. XP gain is also based on three other categories, kills, tactics and health. XP levels the players character up to a max level of 10.
There are currently 10 Achaeans in the game, with the addition of the three Protean bosses. The Achaeans are an alien referred to as ‘parasite’ in the in-game dialogue. For more information on the Achaean lore and where they come from, look up Rainbow Six Siege Outbreak cinematic on YouTube. Out of the 10 Achaeans there are the three “big ones”, being The Smasher pictured on the top middle, The Tormenter pictured on the top left and The Apex pictured on the top right. The community labels them the big ones because they are more powerful than the other seven Archaeans, have more health and have some sort of ability that makes them more of a nuisance to deal with. The other seven Achaeans are still powerful, they are just more common and easier to defeat.
The player has the option of 18 operators to pick from. All of the operators in Extraction come from fellow Ubisoft game Rainbow Six Siege. Each operator has different weapons and a unique gadget to give them the edge against the Achaeans; the operators also have a secondary gadget called react tech, which are things like flash bangs, claymore’s, grenades and many more. The react tech is not unique to specific operators and can be used by any operator in incursions. At the end of operations, the player is rewarded with XP depending on how they did. XP levels up the character played for that operation. Operators can be leveled up to a max level of 10. Each level up rewards the operator with something new. Rewards for leveling up can be something that upgrades that character’s ability, a new weapon, a movement speed increase, damage resistance increase and more. Operators start with 100 HP (hit points) if the operator ends the operation with under 50 HP. Then, that operator becomes injured and they cannot be played for the next few incursions. If the player is unable to exfil their character for any reason. they will go MIA. If an operator goes MIA, the player must go back to the zone they lost then in and complete an incursion to get them back; if this incursion is completed the player get’s the operator back but they are injured. If the player fails, they still get the operator back but they lose XP for that operator.
Overall, Extraction is a very good game recommended for everyone who enjoys video games to play at least once. Expect the game to get more zones, more Achaeans, more operators and more lore, but the game is very new and this will all happen in time.
