The MARVELous Universe
February 23, 2022
I have many obsessions: sweet tea, books, “Dance Moms” and most importantly: the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As of now, there are 27 movies and five Disney+ series. Not all of the movies were released in the timeline order, so Disney+ has a feature where fans can watch the movies in the specific order. The 12th movie in the timeline order: “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” was released on May 1, 2015. Spoiler alerts ahead:
This movie only got a 76% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, which isn’t that bad, but I thought it was an amazing movie. Not only does it have the main six Avengers in it, but it introduces two new characters, one of them being in my top three.
The movie starts out in Sokovia where the six main Avengers, Tony Stark, Steve Rogers, Thor, Bruce Banner, Natasha Romanoff and Clint Barton, are attempting to raid a Hydra building commanded by Baron Strucker (post credit scene of Captain America: The Winter Soldier) who has been experimenting on people using Loki’s scepter.
We then officially get to meet the twins, Pietro and Wanda (my fav) Maximoff. Steve finds and captures Strucker, while Tony finds a secret door to a huge room giving him flashbacks of the attack on New York. We find out that Wanda doesn’t only have telekinetic powers but she can also manipulate minds. She does this to Stark, who has a really scary vision, but after, he takes the scepter and leaves.
Back at the Avengers Tower which used to be the Stark Tower, Tony and Banner discover something inside of the scepter’s gem (the mind stone) and decide to use it for Tony’s “Ultron” global defense program. After failing many many times, they leave for a party to celebrate capturing the scepter.
The artificial intelligence, Ultron (voiced by James Spader, something about his voice is so nice to me), awakens, randomly believing that he needs to basically delete the human population to save the Earth. Ultron basically eats Tony’s private AI, Jarvis (voiced by Paul Bettany, whose voice is so soothing, like he could narrate my life if he wanted). Using scraps from one of the Iron Legion drones, Ultron attacks the Avengers after the party. He escapes with the scepter. He uses Strucker’s base in Sokovia to upgrade his body and build an army of drones. He kills Strucker then recruits the Maximoff twins, as they want revenge on Stark because it was his weapons that killed their parents.
The Avengers then find Ultron and the twins at a base, but Wanda uses her mind control on all of them except for Tony and Barton. The mind control causes Banner to turn into the Hulk and go crazy in a city. Tony eventually is able to stop him with the Hulk-buster armor. With the backlash of the destruction, the group goes into hiding at Barton’s safehouse, where they meet his family that none of them knew about except Nat. The group debates on giving up and fleeing, but Nick Fury shows up and convinces them to fight Ultron.
In a place called Seoul, Ultron forces Dr. Helen Cho, who is a friend of the Avengers, to use her technology with the Wakandan vibranium and the scepter’s gem to make the perfect new body for him. While he is uploading his body, Wanda reads his mind and realizes that he wants to destroy humanity. They then decide to side with the Avengers and distract him while Nat and Barton take the synthetic body. Barton manages to get away with it but Ultron captures Nat.
Tony secretly uploads Jarvis, who was hidden from Ultron deep in the internet, into the body. Thor returns to help activate it and explains that the gem in the middle of the body’s forehead is one of the six infinity stones and that it was a part of his vision.
The body comes to life and is now known as Vision. Vision is played by Paul Bettany which I think is really cool since Jarvis is uploaded into Vision and Jarvis is voiced by Bettany. He is obviously a “worthy” ally because he lifts Mjolnir with no issue. They all go to Sokovia where Ultron built a machine that will send the capital city to the sky, basically taking a chunk out of the Earth, so when it goes crashing down there will be global extinction. Banner rescues Nat who pushes him into the Hulk for the battle.
They all face off against the drones while Fury brings the Helicarrier and SHIELD agents to evacuate the citizens. Ultron steals the Quinjet and starts shooting to stop the evacuation. Pietro shields Barton from the gunfire and dies, which is so sad. The Hulk basically kicks Ultron out leaving him lying on the ground for Wanda to get to him, but she leaves her post watching to make sure the machine isn’t activated. When she leaves, a drone activates it which makes the city begin to plummet to the ground. Stark and Thor overload the machine and destroy it. The Hulk flies away in the Quinjet, afraid that he is going to hurt Nat, since they like each other.
The Avengers establish a new base, and Steve and Nat begin to train the new members of the Avengers: James Rhodes (War Machine), Vision, Sam (Falcon) and Wanda.
In the credit scene, Thanos is upset that none of his “pawns” have done anything good. He shows his gauntlet and announces that he will just get the Infinity Stones himself.
