Seniors explore curiosity about living in ‘80s generation compared to today’s generation

From the clothing to the music to the movies to the hit television shows and more, distinctive characteristics make up different generations. Some enjoy the modern features of today’s generation, while others enjoy the more simplistic days in the ‘80s, but both generations have some benefits and disadvantages.
If she could, Senior Morgan Lindsey would prefer to go back and live during the generation of the ‘80s for the different elements of pop culture she could experience during this time.
“I absolutely love the popular ‘80s movies (The Heathers, Top Gun, The Breakfast Club, Dirty Dancing, Sixteen Candles) and I think it would have been cool to see these movies when they first came out. I think the fashion of the 80s was pretty cool too. It was strange, but I think it would have been fun to wear funky clothes like that,” Lindsey said.
As senior William Secrisky thought about why he would choose to live in the ‘80s, he came to his decision as he thought about what the popular trends and events in the ‘80s had to offer compared to now.
“I would prefer to live in the generation during the ‘80s, and I just think the reason why is because there was more involvement in pop culture and there were more things you could go to like concerts and all of that. When you look at modern day concerts, tickets are worth the price and in the ‘80s, you could go for free,” Secrisky said.
During the ‘80s, technology and media did not have the advancements that there are today, which is what engendered Lindsey to believe that there are benefits to living in the ‘80s.
“I think the 80s had a huge benefit with the lack of social media and all its drama,” Lindsey said. “It would be nice to just worry about the people around you instead of influencers and celebrities.”
According to Secrisky, he believes that there are multiple satisfactions to living in the ‘80s as things then were different.
“There are more freedoms and there weren’t so many worries per say about being sued or anything like that,” Secrisky said.
Even though she would rather live during the ‘80s, Lindsey feels that she would still experience fears with the wars that occurred during this time.
“I think the looming fears of the Cold War and resulting conflicts would have scared me a little bit, Lindsey said.
For Secrisky, living in the generation during the ‘80s would not change the path of his future as he would want to continue pursuing the same career.
“I don’t think I would want to pursue another career because the career I want to pursue is business and I feel that even though we have technology with math I think I would still want to pursue a business degree,” Secrisky said.
Living in a different time period, Lindsey feels that she would still want to pursue the same career.
“I think I would still want to do the same thing. I want to be a neurologist or pediatrician and I don’t think living in a different generation would change my feelings on that, Lindsey said
The lack of communication between people in this day and age is what makes Secriskey rather live in the ‘80s.
“I feel like a lot of this generation now doesn’t really connect on a personal level per say where we are talking and interacting in person,” Secriskey said.
Growing up in the ‘80s, Lindsey believes that her life and her family life would change with the way they interact with each other.
“I think growing up in the ‘80s would embrace the outdoors and my imagination more. I also love eating dinner together as a family and talking about your day,” Lindsey said.
If Secriskey lived during the generation of the ‘80s, he feels that his family life would change as they would all be more present.
“I think what would change is my family would be more present as I think we would do more activities and try to spend more time together,” Secriskey said.
