Booktok Books – my take on the most popular

A thousand lives. On my desk, I have a row of books that I have either read and loved, or books I cant wait to read. The books on my desk change consistently.

Since COVID-19, BookTok has become a popular spot for bibliophiles and new readers alike. Due to BookTok, book sales have amplified, and the number of readers has gone up. Bookstores such as Barnes and Noble have stands of “BookTok Books” lining different areas of the store.

As a reader myself, I have not been able to stay away from BookTok, and the books they talk about. Many popular books that are talked about I have read, and I wish to share my opinions on them to help new readers find their love of reading.

“The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo”  by Taylor Jenkins Reid: I agree with the majority on  this book. I absolutely adored it in every sense of the word. Without a doubt, it is my favorite book of 2023.

Evelyn Hugo has finally agreed to do an interview with Vivant magazine. However, when her interviewer, Monique Grant, comes to her home, she discovers that Evelyn hasn’t agreed to be interviewed for the magazine, but instead plans to have Monique write the story of her life. The good, the bad and the hidden.

As time goes on, Monique begins to love Evelyn and her past, but tragedy and truth evade Monique until the very end of Evelyn’s story.

I absolutely cannot stop talking about this book. Everywhere I go, I rave about it.

Evelyn is so raw, honest and tragic. Her light and beauty shine are matched only by her darkness and sin.

“The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” is 100 percent worth the read.

“It Ends With Us” by Colleen Hoover: After a very long battle with myself, I picked this novel up. In less than 24 hours, I had completed it and I loved it.

When Lily Bloom was 15, she fell in love with a homeless boy named Atlas. However, when her abusive father found out, it was not a pretty sight.  And that’s putting it lightly.

Now, at 23, Lily meets Ryle. Perfect in all ways, she believes she has found her happily ever after—until she finds Atlas again. Then everything around her spirals out of control and she is left to figure out what her true passions are.

Before I go into my opinions, it is important to look up trigger warnings for this book. Some topics may be overwhelming and difficult for some to read about.

I loved this book with all of my heart, but it isn’t for the romance aspect of it. Domestic abuse is a large part of this novel and I feel it was represented and explained really well. Even though it is heartbreaking to read about, it is truly an overpowering experience reading it in this novel.

I would recommend this book to anyone, but have tissues ready.

“The Cruel Prince” by Holly Black: The iconic fantasy novel with the even more iconic enemies to lovers trope.

Jude was young when her father died. But not young enough to know that her adopted father is the one who murdered her father all those years ago. Now, she lives with her sisters and adopted father in Fae.

In Fae, she has to go to school with the vile Prince Cardan.  But, along the way, she begins to think everything isn’t as it seems.

I had such high expectations for this book, and I am sorry to say it was a severe let down. I didn’t enjoy the characters, the dialogue or the plot. Personally, I do not think that this is a book on BookTok that is actually worth it.

Dreamland Billionaires series: BookTok loves its romances, especially when a billionaire is involved.

The Dreamland Billionaires series follows three brothers: Rowan, Declan and Callahan.  When their grandfather dies, he leaves each of them a task that they must accomplish in order to receive their inheritance.

Over the course of three books, “The Fine Print,” “Terms and Conditions” and “The Final Offer,” the three brothers work towards their inheritance and find love along the way.

I can’t express enough how much I adore this series. I loved each brother in their own way and fell in love with everything this book series has to offer. I absolutely would recommend this book series to any and everyone.

Overall, I would say that BookTok has done a pretty wonderful job giving me some recommendations. I have found some of my all time favorite books and I think any reader would be able to find a recommendation or two if they give it a chance.
