Bejmamin continues yearbook through high school

Bejmamin continues yearbook through high school
Sophia Knorr

Senior Lila Benjamin has been on yearbook for about three years.

“It is my senior year, and so far, I’ve pretty much just been doing whatever. I am mostly doing yearbook stuff, but whenever I’m not in school, I’ll just go out with my friends. So far it’s been pretty good this year,” Benjamin said.

Benjamin is devoted to the yearbook community because she is there for about four to five periods a day

“I took Intro in 10th grade, and I had no idea about anything in the yearbook until about that. And then I really liked writing for yearbook pages and stuff. I tried to do Mountain Echo, but it wasn’t really for me. And for the most part, I like to do pictures like photography. I like to help out around the room. I like to make sure things are in order. And I like giving interviews,” Benjamin said.

Although Benjamin is in the class for four to five periods a day, she seems to not get bored.

“I don’t mind it. I think at times it’s a little difficult when there isn’t much to do. It’s nice because I feel like I have extra time to work on my pages and do more,” Benjamin said.

Most people who are in the yearbook like to try and start in ninth grade to get the full experience; however, Benjamin didn’t know about this class until tenth grade. After hearing about the yearbook class, Benjamin jumped at the opportunity to join since she liked graphic design.

“I knew I liked graphic design. And I knew I didn’t really like writing for the newspaper. So I just combined that and I decided that was probably the best decision,” Benjamin said.

Benjamin advises those in Intro to Pub to stick with it because the advanced classes will be different.

“Now, I think it’s a lot easier. I was really stressed at the beginning. I remember even last year.I kind of struggled with getting my pages done. But now I have all this extra time. It’s almost too much time, but I do like having it,” Benjamin said.

Benjamin says that her favorite thing about yearbooks is graphic design and photography.

”I like having an overall look to it when it’s done. ” Benjamin said.

Benjamin has liked writing and reading which directed her toward the class.

“I’ve always liked English based things. I’ve always been better at English, so I just decided to focus on my strong suits,” Benjamin said.

Benjamin feels her start at a private school might have something to do with her love of English.

“I went to a private Montessori school, so it was a very big adjustment going back to public school, I went to a small academy. So I really graduated with like 11 Kids total. Overall, it just was a very big change. And since then, I think that is the reason I like art more because Montessori is like learning at your own pace and doing your own thing. So since then, I’ve just thought that growing up that way has made it more heart centered for me,” Benjamin said..

Benjamin likes school because she can listen more and it is better for her with more people meaning new friends.

“I think I like to hear more. It’s a better environment. I didn’t like it at first but now I’ve decided it’s a lot easier” Benjamin said.

Since there are not many opportunities to pursue this career now Benjamin is not planning on continuing in college.

“I’m not really sure about my major yet but I am going to talk about graffiti on the side. I don’t want to major in it or if I don’t major in broadcasting, but I also really like psychology,” Benjamin said.

Benjamin has mixed feelings about graduating.

“It’s kind of bittersweet because it really has a lot to do with the outside of high school. But besides that, I think I’m going to find something I can do that is similar,” Benjamin said.
