About 27% of Americans say they interact with artificial intelligence (AI) almost constantly or several times a day. People all over America frequently use AI. This is bad for society. Overdependence on AI for problem-solving can ruin a person’s ability to develop critical thinking skills and develop independent learning skills. AI isn’t just bad for school, it is also bad for the work economy. For example, AI is taking over people’s jobs and it progresses everyday.
AI is bad for academics, and studies show that 86% of students have used AI before in their schoolwork, and 54% frequently use it, according to Campus technology. “There is evidence that we’re getting dumber, and the proof is already there,” leading Australian AI expert and author Professor Toby Walsh said. Most students dislike homework, and using AI can seem like a relief. AI can do math homework or even write an essay in a matter of minutes. This leads to intellectual laziness. AI has been guilty of plagiarism when asked to write an essay, AI apps including ChatGPT, the most popular students use. AI also gives misinformation 25% of the time according to Defense One, so students shouldn’t rely on a source that is wrong 25% of the time. 63% of teachers said students have gotten in trouble for using AI in their schoolwork according to Education Week. Passing off work completed by AI as students’ own original work is something that could get students in trouble depending on the school’s policies.
AI takes over people’s jobs daily. AI has grown at such a rate that there has been no time to catch up. This growth makes it very difficult to ensure it’s being used ethically. It has been slowly but surely making its way into many people’s personal and professional lives over the past couple of years. AI is everywhere, just look for it. For example, according to McKinsey, when people go through a drive thru and it’s a robot taking your order, it’s AI. Goldman Sachs even states 300 million full-time jobs could be lost to AI automation, and that will result in many Americans losing their jobs. According to Lica Wouters, it is estimated that AI will create 97 million new jobs by the end of 2025 that humans are not capable of doing. As AI becomes more sophisticated, it could potentially replace all human labor in a range of sectors, leading to job losses and increased economic inequality.
There is no denying that Artificial Intelligence has changed many lives. However, some might argue that it’s for the better. AI has increased in popularity over the years because it helps people get work done in a more timely manner. AI is used a lot by American high schoolers to help get their work done without even doing it; it’s their easy way out of doing their work. AI can also do things that a human isn’t capable of doing, like adeptly handling vast data and identifying intricate patterns. However, AI will likely never be able to achieve true consciousness, empathy or a human’s creativity and originality. AI has been a big money saver to many companies, though, as they have AI taking orders through drive-thrus, so they don’t have to pay as many people. AI is very useful to many people and companies all over the world, and AI will keep on expanding as time goes on.The rapid expansion of AI risks students’ abilities to understand and control its impact, leading to using AI incorrectly and negatively.
Students need to learn to control AI before it learns how to control them. It is very bad for everyone and no one realizes it. People need to realize that AI knows more than us and while that sounds like a good thing, it’s not. It’s already making teens lazier and taking working people’s jobs. If it’s affecting us that much already, imagine how much it will be affecting us in the future.
