As seniors begin their final stretch of graduating high school, many are already laying the foundation for the next major chapter of their lives—college. For some, it’s a matter of finalizing decisions, while for others, it’s a time to reflect on long-term goals and what steps they can take now to ensure a successful transition into higher education and beyond.
Senior Owen Piper has already set his sights on Penn State University, where he plans to pursue a degree in engineering.
“I have been thinking a lot about where I want to be in life and exactly what I want to be doing,” Piper said.
For him, college planning has been a thoughtful and personal process.
“My interests, my grades, my parents”—these are all key factors he considered while choosing his path,” Piper said.
For senior Miyah McDonough, both academics and family are at the heart of her decision-making. She’s already made significant strides toward reaching that final choice.
“I have applied to some colleges, took some tours, and taken multiple SAT’s to get a high score,” McDonough said.
Her preparation goes beyond applications though as she is also focusing on aligning her values with her choices.
Their “medical program and staying close to my family” were two main factors that helped her make her decision.
McDonough’s commitment shows the importance of not only academic fit but emotional and personal comfort when choosing a college.
Senior Braxton Eckenrode is taking a strategic approach to both college and beyond. With aspirations to attend graduate school and aim for leadership roles in his field, his preparation is multi-layered and intentional.
“I plan on going to college and going to a graduate school and want to work for a higher position in my major area,” Eckenrode said. “I have toured a college and plan on touring two more before the end of the year. I have also started my Common App and started to write down scholarships in preparation.”
But for Eckenrode, choosing the right college isn’t just about academics—it’s about community.
“I would say overall the community and the professors,” Eckenrode said. “I got a chance to talk to them and they were just so inspirational and welcoming. That’s the most important thing to me, being in a good environment.”
As seniors prepare to take their next steps, each student’s journey serves as a reminder that the path to college is as much about personal growth and decision as it is about academics and future ambitions.
