On Jan. 27, a survey was sent out to students regarding next year’s Homecoming and whether the school should have a single homecoming royal or switch to having both a Homecoming King and Queen.
“We wanted to get the student opinion in regard to whether or not we should move to selecting both a king and a queen for Homecoming,” Principal Andrew Neely said.
The results of the survey came in and a wide majority of students voted in favor of new changes to Homecoming. The Homecoming Committee is planning on applying these changes next year.
“About 75% of the students who responded said that we should have a king and a queen, and 25% said to leave it as is,” Neely said, “We are definitely trending that direction.”
School organizations will be able to choose one member to serve as their Homecoming candidate; they will not be able to have both a king and a queen.
Scholarship amounts for the Homecoming royals will remain the same as previous years, the only difference being it’s now divided among four people instead of two.
“It’ll still be the same total amount; it’ll just be divided amongst four: the two winners, King, Queen and then runner up,” Neely said.
Students have differing opinions on the upcoming change to homecoming
“I prefer that there’d be no king, but I think that it’s good that girls are going to get the chance to get queen no matter what,” junior Lana Luke said. “I think that it was something that was important to girls.”
“I think there should only be one,” Junior Adam Strohman said. “ I think that it shouldn’t be as open as it is to guys and it feels less special than crowning two people.”
“I just think that it gives more students the opportunity to show leadership and have that label because a lot of people do want that label as Homecoming Queen or King,” Junior Baylin Smith said. “It gives another person an opportunity. Especially since we don’t usually have guys run for Homecoming, being able to have that opportunity as a label now is probably refreshing for them to see. I think it’s just more fair to have a king and a queen because Homecoming is such a feminine thing that having guys running for it as well opens up a broader range of people to be involved in it. So I think just having a guy and a girl be King and Queen is refreshing to see and gives people a better opportunity to hold a place in the school.”
