On March 16, the school’s annual teacher March Madness competition kicked off once again. Posters for competing teachers have transformed the halls into colorful campaign wagons, and many of their own students have taken initiative and started campaigning for them.
This yearly competition may seem like little more than a popularity contest that helps raise some money for a local cause, but to think that is to ignore the energy it has ignited in students and staff alike.
It’s true that there is a certain amount of “popularity” involved, but there is also a huge amount of dedication. On the teacher’s side, they design flyers and even perform skits or stunts. While on the students’ side, they spread their teacher’s campaign throughout the school via their friends and classmates.
In forming these united fronts around their teacher of choice, students become engaged in the school as a whole, rather than just in their own classes or grades. The competition for the winning bracket is also unifying in this way, and grants recognition to students who might not be recognized on such a large scale otherwise.
The student campaigning also provides a reason for kids to come to school, adding a bit of excitement to an otherwise long, monotonous day. It also grants a much-needed mental recess in the time between winter and spring break, which can help students recharge and consequently give them more energy for their classes.
March is arguably one of the most difficult school months to get through, with its 31 days and often horrible weather, but this competition makes it a little more bearable. It rejuvenates the school, bringing in a fresh energy for the staff and new enthusiasm for the students.
Additionally, in putting a spin on the original March Madness, centered around college basketball, teacher March Madness allows students who aren’t interested in sports to enjoy the thrill and intrigue of constructing a bracket and seeing how their guesses match up to the results. It’s an inclusive, rewarding and school-safe version of its namesake.
In all, teacher March Madness gives every student the opportunity to be a part of something school-wide, and to have some fun along the way.
