On Wednesday, April 1, Girls’ League met to build Easter baskets for the non-profit organization, Easter for Eli. The club is advised by gym teacher Megan Yingling.
“Easter for Eli is a non-profit organization started by a father who lost his son to cancer,” Yingling said. “He has poured his heart and soul into putting smiles on children and their families while they are in the hospital.”
Eli Garrett lost his battle with cancer at the age of four over ten years ago. The school supports his foundation by holding district-wide dressdown days and putting together baskets for children aging from four to eight.
“The baskets consisted of; coloring books, crayons, bunny stress balls, cloud dough, bunny ears, sun classes, LED coloring board, mini plushy, stickers, tattoos and sticky slap hands,” Yingling said.
The girls’ met in the field house lobby on April 1 right after school to construct the baskets.
Senior Kirra Klein has been in the club for two years.
“I hope that [the children] get a lot of joy out of [the baskets]” Klein said. “I honestly was playing with some of the stuff. There were some really nice things and I really liked the baskets this year.”
The club organized the baskets by passing down items to the next person in a line at the tables in the lobby. The Girls’ League account paid for the items, so no items needed to be donated.
Senior Jordan Lao joined the club her junior year.
“I hope [the children] like [the baskets] and all the things we brought them,” Lao said. “I hope [the children] enjoy getting something since they can’t really celebrate this year.”
A total of fifty baskets were made and delivered to the central office in Roaring Spring by Yingling. The baskets were then donated to the children in the hospital.
“We hope that the items in the baskets put a smile on [the children’s] faces during this trying time they are going through,” Yingling said. “A big heartfelt thank you to those who donated to help this cause.”
