Netflix series “Atypical” provides comfort in times of uncertainty

Alyssa Dongell, Guest Reporter

“Atypical” is a Netflix series. There are four4 seasons to the show. Every character in the series has an important role and does well showing it too.

The show covers many different real-life situations that happen to a lot of people on a daily basis. Personally, I discovered this show in April 2020, right after the pandemic started. I felt very alone, not being able to see my family and friends like I used to. I started watching Netflix much more than I did before and “Atypical” just happened to be one of my favorite shows I ever watched. It turned into my comfort show instantly. I binge watched it for two2 days and loved every single episode. When I realized a new season was coming out in 2021, I could not have been more excited.

The show covers many topics that most shows cannot cover properly. In “Atypical”, the main character’s name is Sam. He is autistic and the show covers his mental disability, how it affects him and his relationships on a daily basis. The show also covers parents divorcing, teenagers finding themselves and coming out to their family and friends, break ups, losing friends, realistic drama, having an autistic family member or friend and infidelity. All of these topics can be challenging to deal with, but the Netflix series really knows how to portray all of them in a realistic manner.

I have a cousin with autism, I came out to my family when I was only 12 years old, my parents divorced when I was 17, I have lost many friendships and dealt with crazy drama just like everyone else has.

To put it in a nutshell, “Atypical” became my comfort show because it made me feel less lonely in a time where we had to be by ourselves. Quarantine was mandatory, and you were too scared to leave your house. Netflix became my friend. and “Atypical” became an even closer friend.

I definitely recommend this show to everyone. Everyone could find at least one character in the show to relate to. I give it a 5/5 star rating. This show will always be on the top of my list and I don’t think there will ever be a day where I do not watch it.
