ANNOUNCEMENTS FOR TUESDAY, MARCH 26, 2024

Attention Students: BREAKING NEWS! The AAHS March Madness tournament is
back for another year! Nearly 64 of your teachers-with a few surprise entries mixes in-
are vying for the title of Teacher Champion in 2024.
And there is SO MUCH more drama this year! You will soon receive an email with
directions on entering a schoolwide Bracket Challenge, where you can pick your
bracket, and see how it stacks up against the 2,200 other students at AAHS. The Top
10 highest-scoring brackets will win prizes, and unbeatable bragging rights.
Remember to vote your own teachers through, as the students of the Teacher
Champion will receive a day of parties and celebrations.
New this year, daily voting will be completed on your ChromeBooks. But beginning
with the Sweet Sixteen, you may still buy bonus votes for your favorite teachers during
lunchtime, with all proceeds benefiting the Altoona Food Bank.
Brace your Teen selves; the Madness is about to begin!

Attention Students: 31 AAHS language buffs rocked the house at the APPLES
Foreign Language Festival at IUP this past weekend! Joining 200 students from
nearby schools, they slayed in listening, reading, writing, speaking, and the arts-en
francais, auf Deutsch, and in espanol. Check out our AASD stars who snagged ribbons
in various events!

Attention Students: If you are interested in a career in law enforcement or the
military, you may want to stop by the Guidance Office and pick up information about
The Elmer Hafer American Legion State Police National Guard Youth Camp. This camp
is being held at Messiah University in Mechanicsburg, PA from June 9 th through June
15 th . Activities and demonstrations include police scenarios, physical fitness training,
drill and ceremony, forensics, traffic and criminal law, water survival, marksmanship
and team building. During this camp, there will be several $1,000 scholarships
awarded. Students attending should be physically fit, in good health and have a good
academic record.

Also, being held in June at Messiah University is the Keystone Boys State which is an
educational workshop for leadership development and focuses on municipal, county,
and state government. This camp is for young men who have completed their junior
year in high school. Dates are June 16 th through June 22 nd . More information can be
found with the scholarships outside of Guidance.

Attention Seniors: For the tenth year in a row, the Mike Rowe Works Foundation is
launching the next Work Ethic Scholarship Program and giving away another
$1,000,000 is launching this year. We’re looking for hardworking men and women
who will keep the lights on, water running, and air flowing-people who will show up
early, stay late, and work hard to get the job done. It’s not for everyone, but we know
hard workers are out there. For more information, please stop by Guidance to pick up
a flyer!

Attention ninth grade students: The Altoona Area School District Student
Ambassadors represent our school district at many special community events. Students
who have an outgoing and pleasant personality and maintain at least a B grade point
average are invited to apply for membership in this 18-member organization.
A fact sheet about the Student Ambassador program and an application form can
be picked up in the School Counselor's Office. Completed application forms must be
returned by Friday, April 5 to Ms. Fischer in the Counseling Office.  If you have
questions please see Mrs. Gardner.

Attention Juniors: If you are interested in being a class officer next year,
applications are still available outside Mrs. Dumm’s room, B120. The deadline for
submission is Thursday, March 28 th . No late applications will be accepted.

Attention Seniors who sold PowerHouse Subs for AfterGlo: Orders will be
delivered TOMORROW, March 27 th . Students can pick up their orders at the end of the
school day Wednesday near the main entrance or from 3:00 pm-4:30 pm at the main
entrance of the B building. Please do not try to pick up early as it will interfere with
dismissal. Please make necessary arrangements to have all orders picked up as all
items are perishable and we have nowhere to store them.

Attention students applying for scholarships: Several deadlines are fast
approaching for a number of scholarships. Those scholarships are as follows: The
Epilepsy Association Scholarship has a deadline of April 1 st ; both the Blair Garden Club
Scholarship as well as the Eldorado Civic Association Scholarship have a deadline of
April 5 th ; if you are applying for the Valley Rural Electric Scholarship, you need to have
your application submitted by April 7 th ; and finally, the DKG Women Educators
Scholarship is due on April 8 th .

Attention students: The Black Student Union will be holding an interest meeting
today, Tuesday, March 26 th in Mrs. Stephen’s room, A229, right after school at 2:50
PM. The Black Student Union is a club that was organized and started by students in
2020 to bring AAHS minority and African American students together as a group. The
club’s mission is to increase acceptance of those who are diverse in the school,
celebrate history, culture and inclusion while educating and giving back to the school
and community in a positive way. If this sounds like something that you’d be
interested in, please consider joining the Black Student Union in A229 after school
today.

Attention Seniors: If you are planning a future in any of the many aspects of
Cosmetology, then you will want to stop by the literature rack outside of Guidance
and pick up the Carol Jo Sicheneder Scholarship application, offered through the Salon
Professional Academy, valued at $4,000. The April 1 st application deadline is fast
approaching so do not wait!

Students are reminded that parking is not permitted along 5 th Avenue

between 14 th and 15 th Streets. Violators will be subjected to ticketing.
