Dear Editor,
Due to the surge of AI, students are not actually doing their work but relegating it to the AI of their choice. I myself use AI as a scarce resource, rarely even thinking about it. I feel that many students have moved to more advanced classes than they ever were able to handle thanks to the use of AI in their work.
A lot of people that I know use AI like it’s their life line. I feel that the school and students should restrict the use of AI in school.
I also believe that the district should buy a better AI detector. Without them, teachers are practically left to use a detector that fools reality easily. AI detectors can flag really good work as AI.
Another thing is the possibility for it to spread misinformation as well in an education setting. This is possible due to the fact that AI searches every website and has an algorithm set up just for you. It can also show information that was correct but is now out of date. The AI can also misunderstand the question and give you an incorrect answer.
There are some pros to AI though. A lot of administrators use AI to quickly make bellringers for classes and to write emails, something I do as well. You can also use it to help study from a specific website when you give it to the AI to use.
With that being said, though, the student body uses AI for things it shouldn’t and find that without proper regulation and punishment for use in graded work it will only get more and more out of control.
The final reason to limit the use of AI is academic integrity. The fact that students use AI can cause a mistrust between student and teacher. Your grades may not reflect your efforts due to you not trying like everyone else, causing an unfair advantage. AI use can also cause an increase of stricter policies by teachers and administrators that affect not only students but in some cases staff as well
To end, I’m not saying to ban AI completely. AI is a tool that should be available to all, but it’s when people abuse AI that we need to focus on it. I think putting harder penalties on work made by AI is the best course of action.

The thing is that this would change nothing because the school administration tells their own teachers to use AI. They hate when we use it but they love their teachers to use it and it so easy to see that they are just having people use AI to make work now and not even the teachers themselves. Just like senior week administration has people get lazier and lazier
