Gloria Gates Foundation provides volunteer opportunities

When junior Myah Lear found out about the Gloria Gates Memorial Foundation, her attention was immediately drawn. She has always been one to help out in any way possible and was very excited about this opportunity that had been given to her.

According to Lear, this foundation is very helpful for many kids and gives them a good work environment, so they can be successful in school.

“The Gloria Gates Memorial Foundation is an organization where a bunch of kids can go to a certain place after school and get homework help that they can’t really get at home,” Lear said.

Not only does Lear help younger kids with homework, but she also makes sure they are having a good time. She wants to make sure that they are doing well educationally and socially, and this foundation also helps with that.

“I occasionally help the kids with their homework. They have snacks at the beginning, and I’ll help prepare that every now and then. When the kids are done with their homework, they get to play games and go outside, and sometimes I’ll  play around with them,” Lear said.

Lear loves this hands-on experience, and she feels that she has made an impact on the kids’ education as well as the world as a whole.

“I feel like with the help that I give them, they are able to do a little better on their homework and get some better grades…I feel like there are a lot of kids who aren’t able to get the help that they need, and going to this place really helps them. They’re able to grow their skills and get better grades which can lead to a better future overall,” Lear said.

Although Lear is a junior, she helps out younger children from many different schools and grades. She doesn’t just keep to the Altoona area and branches out to help these children.

“Kindergarten to sixth grade, from Hollidaysburg and Altoona elementary schools,” Lear said.

Lear continues to help out within this foundation, even though she has many things going on in her life. She still prioritizes her school and social activities while contributing herself to this organization.

“I have a lot of stuff to do with newspaper and my honors classes. So I have a lot of homework and sometimes that can take a few hours at the least, recently it’s maybe once every two weeks,” Lear said.

Although there are many different foundations and organizations that Lear could have joined, she continues to help out younger children academically, so  they can have a ‘better future.’
